Patent number: 9145580Abstract: Compositions and methods are provided for enriching mitochondrial DNA and optionally chloroplast DNA from eukaryotic cells in a simple rapid method that provides greater than 100 fold enrichment. Affinity protein-coated substrate in a buffer is used to efficiently bind chromosomal DNA and thereby remove it from the buffer. Mitochondrial sequencing reads reveal that non-biased sequence selection providing representation of a substantial proportion of mitochondrial DNA in the eukaryotic cells analyzed.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2013Date of Patent: September 29, 2015Assignee: New England Biolabs, Inc.Inventors: George R. Patent number: 8980553Abstract: Compositions and methods are provided for enriching non-target polynucleotides from a mixture of non-target and target polynucleotides where differences between the target polynucleotides and the non-target polynucleotides include the extent of modified bases that are present in a greater density in the target polynucleotides than in the non-target polynucleotides. This permits the target polynucleotides to be selectively and rapidly bound to an affinity matrix such as affinity protein-coated magnetic beads providing enrichment of the non-target polynucleotides in the supernatant. One use of this enrichment is to remove human genomic DNA from a mixture of DNAs obtained from human tissue samples to enrich for polynucleotides in a microbiome so as to characterize the microbiome by DNA sequencing.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2012Date of Patent: March 17, 2015Assignee: New England Biolabs, Inc.Inventors: George R. Publication number: 20140303466Abstract: Automating the processes of receiving, storing and analyzing blood glucose readings obtained from a diabetic using one or more computer-based systems may provide a number of advantages in the management of levels of glucose in the diabetic's blood. Information regarding a blood glucose reading obtained from a user may be transmitted in one or more messages to the user, to an interested party (e.g. family member), or to a third party over a network, and may serve as the basis for a computer-based motivation strategy to encourage the diabetic to comply with a blood glucose management regime. Additionally, such information may be manually or automatically posted to a social network, thereby enabling the diabetic to receive words of encouragement and support from his or her social network connections, and thereby increase his or her motivation to comply with the blood glucose management regime accordingly.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 4, 2014Publication date: October 9, 2014Applicant: Applivate, LLCInventors: John Stephen Fitzpatrick, Clifton Isamu Hayashida, Harvey Zar, James McFarland, Michael Pantalon, Marianne Sharsky Pantalon

Publication number: 20110108516Abstract: A novel bottle being ergonomically designed for active consumers is disclosed herein. In a preferred embodiment, the bottle has a design ideally shaped to mate to a user's hand that is ideally suited to walkers or even runners, for example. The embodiment further comprises an outer container having a vent hole, and an inner liner further coupled to a one-way valve; and together, this combination of structure reduces sloshing as is common in a partially filled bottle. Additionally, the inner liner is disposable and biodegradeable, and therefore the bottle outer container does not have to be washed or through away, that may otherwise pollute our environment, and increase consumption of raw materials. Ideally, the sports bottle herein comprises low-density polyethylene for comfort and easy squeezing of the outer container. Also, a novel method for lining a sports bottle (or bottle for other purpose) is disclosed herein.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 7, 2010Publication date: May 12, 2011Inventor: James McFarland
