  • Publication number: 20080090449
Abstract: The invention is directed to a positive evidence-of-use feature for portable storage devices. A system in accordance with an embodiment includes: a movable outer sleeve for surrounding a portion of the portable storage device, wherein the movable outer sleeve is configured for movement in one direction only; and a ratcheting system for retracting and permanently locking the movable outer sleeve into a housing of the portable storage device to expose a contact area of the portable storage device, the ratcheting system limiting the movable outer sleeve to a single retraction into the housing of the portable storage device, such that the ratcheting system is configured to be broken upon any attempt to extend the movable outer sleeve after the movable outer sleeve has been retracted and permanently locked into the housing of the portable storage device. Retraction of the movable outer sleeve provides positive evidence-of-use for the portable storage device.

  • Patent number: 7288232
Abstract: A photo-catalytic overcoat on a UV reflective paint layer is employed to maintain high reflectance for long periods of time by continuously removing organic films when exposed to UV light. Advantageously, nano-particles comprising the photo-catalytic overcoat are composed of a semiconductor material that lead to the production of oxygen and hydroxyl free radicals when illuminated with UV light in the presence of water vapor. Some of these free radicals oxidize organic surface films, converting the surface films into gaseous H2O and CO2. This reduces the amount of organic deposits on the surface of the reflective paint layer.

  • Publication number: 20070113240
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for correlating a cost of receiving media to a user's exposure to advertising. A media display system including a media recorder detects and reports that a media display system user has skipped over an advertising program without watching or listening to the advertising program. A fee is calculated and charged to the user in lieu of the user's watching or listening to the advertising program. Alternatively, a user may subscribe to a service that allows the user to skip over some or all advertising programs displayed on the media display system.

  • Patent number: 7206882
Abstract: A CANOpen network including a bus master and an I/O module is disclosed. Each is communicatively coupled to a common bus. The I/O module is subject to a state change. The bus master collects state information from the I/O module by determining if the bus master is prepared to receive further data from the bus and sending a trigger signal from the bus master to the I/O module if the bus master is prepared to receive further data from the bus. The I/O modules sends a state signal to the bus master in response to the trigger signal.

  • Publication number: 20070080878
Abstract: A low-loss, high-efficiency, broadband antenna including both electric and magnetic dipole radiators is provided herein. The broadband antenna may be referred to as a “P×M antenna” and may generally include a ground plane; a magnetic radiator formed within the ground plane; a conductive feed arranged within a first plane, which is parallel to the ground plane; and an electric radiator arranged within a second plane, which is perpendicular to the ground plane and coupled at one end to the conductive feed. According to a particular aspect of the invention, the electric and magnetic radiators are substantially complementary to one another and are coupled for producing a P×M radiation pattern over a broad range of operating frequencies. One advantage of the P×M antenna described herein is that the complementary antenna elements are combined without the use of a lossy, resistive matching network, thereby increasing the efficiency with which the P×M radiation pattern is produced.

  • Patent number: 7146835
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for reducing the width of a plurality of longitudinal slots or other openings spaced circumferentially around a slotted tubular member. The invention includes a seaming roller positioned to contact the outer surface of the slotted tubular member for transverse movement across the plurality of slots, and adapted to apply a force onto the slotted tubular member so as to reduce the slot width. The width of the plurality of slots is detected and compared to a set value indicative of a desired end slot width and based on this comparison, an adjustor connected to the seaming roller, adjusts the force applied by the seaming roller to the plurality of slots. Each opening is adjusted by the seaming roller to have a profile with a width that throughout the length of the slot profile, varies no more than a given tolerance from the desired end slot width.

  • Publication number: 20060190690
Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for identifying unauthorized access to memory locations in a multi-element data storage device. The invention includes a restrictive key that is physically coupled to at least one inaccessible memory element in the data storage device. The key prevents the user from accessing the data in that element. A securing device connects the restrictive key to the data storage device's housing. When the key is altered from its initial position, the securing device is broken. Because the securing device is at least partially located on the outside of the device housing, it is readily visible. Therefore, if the securing device has been broken, the key to which the securing device was coupled was necessarily moved. This provides visual evidence that there has been an attempt to access one or more data memory areas that had been previously been rendered inaccessible by the restrictive key.

  • Publication number: 20060179078
Abstract: A method and system for controlling one or more user playlists in a digital media communications system. A media control unit that stores or has access to digital media content detects the presence of one or more users of the digital media communications system. The media control unit obtains a playlist containing preferred multimedia selections from each user and stores each playlist. A universal playlist is then constructed where the universal playlist incorporates the preferred media selections form each participating user's playlist. Media selections are then played or made available to the users of the system from the universal playlist.

  • Patent number: 7073366
Abstract: A method to reduce the width of slots or openings in a pipe. The method involve determining the position of the slots relative to the surface of the pipe and determining the width of the slots. A signal is generated corresponding to the determined width and relative position of the slots and the signal is directed to a controller. The controller compares the determined width of the slots with a pre-determined value and identifies slots having widths greater than the pre-determined value. The exterior surface of the pipe adjacent to the slots having determined widths greater than the pre-determined value is treated through causing one or more compression tools to be moved to selectively contact the exterior surface of the pipe adjacent to the identified slots so as to selectively reduce the width of the slots.

  • Publication number: 20060012535
Abstract: A broadband antenna including both electric and magnetic dipole radiators is provided herein. The broadband antenna may be referred to as a “P×M antenna” and may include a pair of magnetic loop elements, each having multiple feed points symmetrically spaced around the loop element. The broadband antenna may also include an electric dipole element arranged between the pair of magnetic loop elements. • Publication number: 20050231436
Abstract: As provided herein, a dual- or quad-ridged broadband horn antenna may include a pair of conductive antenna elements arranged opposite one another for guiding an electromagnetic wave in a longitudinal direction through the horn antenna. In some cases, the pair of conductive antenna elements may include substantially convex inner surfaces and appropriately shaped outer surfaces. The convex inner surfaces may generally function to direct or guide the radiated energy without disturbing the intended radiation pattern. To maintain the intended radiation pattern, the broadband horn antenna may also include a pair of tapered extension elements, each coupled to an outer surface of a different one of the antenna elements at one end thereof. In some cases, a magnetic material may be arranged upon at least a portion of the antenna elements to restrict surface currents to flowing along the inner surfaces only.
