Patent number: 9136607Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of, and corresponding apparatus for, electronically steering an antenna beam. Beam steering is accomplished by altering the electric-field distribution at the open-end of one or more overmoded waveguides through the controlled mixing of multiple modes. An example method includes propagating a signal in multiple modes in a waveguide, and controlling the relative phase and amplitude of the respective modes, relative to each other, to steer the beam. A further example includes a common waveguide enabling the propagation of multiple modes, first and second waveguides enabling the propagation of respective first and second modes, a splitter/combiner coupling the first and second waveguides to the common waveguide, and a controller for controlling a propagation characteristic of the modes relative to each other in a least one path to steer the beam. Electronically steering a beam is useful for fine-tuned angle adjustments and tight beam scanning.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2012Date of Patent: September 15, 2015Assignee: Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyInventor: James P. Patent number: 7780407Abstract: A rotary machine and a method of assembling a rotary machine having a casing extending at least partially around a rotor are provided. The method includes providing a diaphragm patch ring. The method also includes assembling a diaphragm assembly by configuring a diaphragm bore portion to receive the diaphragm patch ring and forming a diaphragm patch member sub-assembly by coupling the diaphragm patch ring to the configured diaphragm bore portion, such that the diaphragm bore portion defines at least one dowel passage and at least one bolt passage. The method further includes inserting at least one dowel generally radially into the at least one dowel passage, inserting at least one fastening bolt generally radially into the at least one bolt passage to secure the diaphragm patch ring to the diaphragm bore portion, and positioning the diaphragm assembly in a gap formed by the casing and the rotor.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2006Date of Patent: August 24, 2010Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: James P. Patent number: 6768721Abstract: An analyzer for a wireless network is configured for surfing a plurality of channels, each for an individually selectable period of time, for monitoring each channel to obtain packet information for analysis, to detect any defects in communication over each respective channel.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2001Date of Patent: July 27, 2004Assignee: Networks Associates Technology, Inc.Inventors: Peter O. Schmitz, Dominick A. Cafarelli, James P. Anderson, Elazar Rosenthal

Patent number: 6477648Abstract: A trusted workstation includes a network interface card (NIC) with trusted computing base (TCB) extensions that provide for securely booting the workstation and performing subsequent receive and transmit packet filtering in support of a network's system architecture requirements. The NIC includes a send address confirm circuit which includes a trusted source address (e.g., a MAC address) uniquely associated with the trusted workstation. For each packet to be transmitted from the trusted workstation over the network, the NIC first checks the source address inserted in the packet by the NIC driver running in the user session to be sure that the driver inserted source address is to equal to the trusted address resident. Thus, if untrusted software on the workstation attempts mischiefly transmit a forged packet with a source address other than the trusted source address, the NIC prohibits transmission of the packet with the forged source address.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1997Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Assignee: Novell, Inc.Inventors: Roger R. Schell, Douglas Lavell Hale, Willard Monten Wiseman, James P. Anderson

Patent number: 6412124Abstract: A shower curtain is formed of a plurality of hanging panels which are attached to a track member for automatic deployment between a retracted, or drying, arrangement and an extended, or barrier, arrangement. Each panel has an ogee, or ‘S’, shape. A plurality of sliding portions, with a panel attached thereto, engage the track member for displacement therealong. Two connectors couple each adjacent pair of sliding portions to provide the desired automatic rotation to the sliding portions and the panels attached thereto. One of these connectors is fixedly positioned relative to one of the pair of sliding portions to convey rotational movement thereto. The second of these connectors is pivotally positioned relative to the second of the pair of sliding portions. The connectors are pivotally coupled together distal from their respective coupling to the respective sliding portions.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2000Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Inventor: James P Anderson

Patent number: 5904669Abstract: An improved valve utilizes a ball or sphere positioned within a housing which is movable by source of magnetic force external to the housing, the housing having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, and a sealing member positioned within the housing adjacent the fluid inlet or the fluid outlet. A modular control valve apparatus is provided having at least one or a plurality of valves in the housing, each having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, and a passage from a source of fluid or aspiration to an instrument or other device to direct and/or utilize the fluid or aspiration. Control is provided by including one or more pressure monitors, such as diaphragms positioned in recesses in a surface of the housing, coupled to passageways connected to passageways leading to fluid flow conduits. Variations in pressure in the conduits are transmitted from the diaphragm to a sensor such as a transducer to generate a signal, which activates a correcting electronic circuit which in turn controls a pump for a vacuum system.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1996Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Assignee: FibraSonics Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Schildgen, James P. Anderson

Patent number: 5448786Abstract: A barrier to restrict the distribution of water during a showering procedure comprising moveable ogee, S-shaped, panels along a tract housing to be mounted above the opening to the showering area. A mechanism within the tract housing allows for distributing the panels across the opening, followed by rotation of the panels along their vertical axis line perpendicular to the horizontal, to form the barrier. During the retracted open position, the panels are not in contact one with the next. Similarly in the extended open position prior to rotation, the panels are not in contract one with the next. Adequate ventilation is provided to significantly reduce the growth of molds or funguses associated with showering areas.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1995Date of Patent: September 12, 1995Inventor: James P.
