Publication number: 20220283038Abstract: Provided herein is an apparatus and method for sensing the temperature of a tubing wall, and inferentially the temperature of a fluid within the tubing. The apparatus includes first and second clamp bodies, the first clamp body comprising a heat transfer element and a first and a second electrical connection connected thereto, the second clamp body connectable to the first clamp body to form a clamping cavity therebetween within which a clamped element having a wall is securable, the heat transfer element configured to contact an outer surface of a clamped element therebetween. The heat transfer element may include a thermally conductive compliant element extending through one of the clamp bodies and inwardly of the clamping cavity.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 3, 2022Publication date: September 8, 2022Inventors: James PRADUN, Michael RAMACCIOTTI, Genaro RODRIGUEZ, Alan CAMYRE, Jon HYLBERT

Patent number: 11255244Abstract: A control system includes an electric heater disposed within an exhaust fluid flow pathway, and a control device for receiving at least one input selected from the group consisting of temperature readings along the exhaust fluid flow pathway, alternator power/current/voltage, battery power/current/voltage/state of charge, IAT and EAT profiles, mass flow rate of an exhaust fluid flow, NH3 slip, TCR characteristics of the heater, alternator speed, engine speed, state of aging of an aftertreatment component, state of aging of engine, aging degradation characteristics, a dosing rate and a temperature of DEF, NH3 storage condition of aftertreatment system, an ambient temperature, and combinations thereof. The control device modulates power to the heater based on the at least one input such that the heater provides different power output as a function of the at least one input and a continuously variable power output during operation of the exhaust system.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2019Date of Patent: February 22, 2022Assignee: WATLOW ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING COMPANYInventors: David P. Culbertson, Magdi Khair, Mark Hoven, James Pradun

Patent number: 11028759Abstract: A heater system for an exhaust system is provided. The heater system includes a heater disposed in an exhaust conduit. The heater includes a plurality of heating elements disposed in the exhaust conduit. A heating control module controls the plurality of heating elements differently according to operating conditions specific to each heating element. In other forms, the heater system for an exhaust system has a plurality of heating zones, instead of a plurality of heating elements. The heating control module controls the plurality of heating zones differently according to operating conditions specific to each heating zone.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2020Date of Patent: June 8, 2021Assignee: Watlow Electric Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Mark D. Everly, James Pradun, Sanhong Zhang

Patent number: 10934921Abstract: A method of predicting the temperature of a resistive heating element in a heating system is provided. The method includes obtaining resistance characteristics of resistive heating elements and compensating for variations in the resistance characteristics over a temperature regime. The resistance characteristics of the resistive heating element include, but are not limited to, inaccuracies in resistance measurements due to strain-induced resistance variations, variations in resistance due to the rate of cooling, shifts in power output due to exposure to temperature, resistance to temperature relationships, non-monotonic resistance to temperature relationships, system measurement errors, and combinations of resistance characteristics. The method includes interpreting and calibrating resistance characteristics based on a priori measurements and in situ measurements.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2017Date of Patent: March 2, 2021Assignee: Watlow Electric Manufacturing CompanyInventors: David P. Culbertson, Jeremy Ohse, Mark D. Everly, Jeremy J. Quandt, James Pradun, John Rohde, Mark L. G. Hoven, Bret Wadewitz, Sanhong Zhang
