Patent number: 5356735Abstract: A temperature controllable electric storage battery having monobloc construction and including thin, planar, heat exchangers placed throughout the battery between the electrode plates thereof. Preferably, the heat exchangers will comprise the intercell partitions of the battery container and the liquid passages therein will have an elongated cross section in a direction transverse the passage so as to provide a wide passage having the majority of the surface defining the passage lying in planes substantially parallel to the external face of the heat exchangers.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1993Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Clarence A. Meadows, James R. Bish

Patent number: 5344727Abstract: A bipolar electrode for a Pb-acid battery comprising a lead septum plate and a porous coating on at least one face of the septum plate for anchoring at least the positive active material paste to the septum. The porous coating comprises multiple layers of lead particles fused together and to the septum face so as to define a plurality of interconnected, interstitial pores therebetween. The particles are fused droplets of lead arc-sprayed into the surface of the septum. A particular bipolar and battery construction useful with the bipolar electrode is disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1993Date of Patent: September 6, 1994Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Clarence A. Meadows, James R. Bish, Robert E. Adams

Patent number: 5326656Abstract: A bipolar battery comprising a plurality of bipolar electrodes stacked together, each bipolar electrode comprising a conductive septum having positive and negative active material on opposite faces thereof. Each electrode has a nonconductive frame formed thereabout, and a mesa-like lattice which is integral with the frame, overlays the faces of the septum and is defined by an annular shoulder formed between the border of the lattice and the frame. Discrete spacer frames interjacent the electrode frames separate the electrodes from each other and define a region thereabout for retaining the battery's electrolyte. The faces of the spacer include an annular recess contiguous an inner rim thereof which receives, in nesting fashion, the mesa-like lattices for interlocking the several frames together.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1993Date of Patent: July 5, 1994Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Clarence A. Meadows, Robert E. Adams, James R. Bish

Patent number: 5106708Abstract: Bipolar battery and method of making intercell connections between adjacent cells thereof including a container having an intercell partition a section of which is thicker than the remainder of the partition. The thickened section has an opening therethrough receiving the intercell connectors, which opening has a mouth at each end thereof confronting one of a set of adjacent cell compartments. Barriers are provided contiguous the mouths of the opening and define therebetween a region in the opening for receiving sealant injected thereinto. The barriers confine the sealant to the region and prevent it from exuding into the adjacent cell compartments. In one embodiment, the barriers comprise rails molded onto the bipolar electrodes. In another embodiment, the barriers comprise compressed glass mats.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1990Date of Patent: April 21, 1992Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: James R. Bish, George W. Brutchen, Mark E. Boram

Patent number: 4800142Abstract: Electrode plate for an electric storage battery including a lug for electrically coupling the plate to other plates in the battery and an insulating collar tightly engaging the root of each plate lug. In a stack of plates, the several collars abut one another so as to separate the lugs from each other and may serve to form a mold for shaping a plate strap cast thereon.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1987Date of Patent: January 24, 1989Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: James R. Bish, Charles P. McCartney, Jr., Clarence A. Meadows
-
Patent number: 4764182Abstract: A galvanic cell stack including a plurality of alternately interleaved positive and negative polarity plates each including a conductive lug projecting therefrom for electrically coupling to other plates of like polarity in the cell stack. Each set of like polarity plate lugs includes a polymer strip pressure molded in situ about the roots of the lugs.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1987Date of Patent: August 16, 1988Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: James R. Bish, Charles P. McCartney

Patent number: 4200143Abstract: Apparatus for continuously casting metal strips at various rates wherein and whereby a non-turbulent, constant-head, constant-temperature source of dross-free melt is provided to the casting nozzle by pumping the melt from a reservoir upwardly through a standpipe open midway to the nozzle and overflowing it from the standpipe back to the reservoir. An adjustable wire atop the standpipe controls the metalostatic head above the casting nozzle, and a reversible pump permits ready aborting of a casting run.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1977Date of Patent: April 29, 1980Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Robert C. Matter, James R. Bish

Patent number: 4150714Abstract: Apparatus for continuously casting lead strip at various rates upwards of about 8 ft. per minute including a nonturbulent, constant-head, constant-temperature source of dross-free melt, an open-ended casting nozzle, an insulator thermally isolating the nozzle from the source and an aromatic polyimide seal at the inlet of the nozzle. Melt is pumped upwardly through a standpipe which is open midway to the nozzle. An adjustable weir atop the standpipe controls the metalostatic head above the casting nozzle, and a reversible pump permits ready aborting of a casting run.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1977Date of Patent: April 24, 1979Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Larry P. Atkins, James R. Bish

Patent number: 4122890Abstract: A continuous casting nozzle for lead strip adapted for cooling with water or the like. Primary and secondary cooling channels are arranged in paralleling relation and intercommunicated by a plurality of ports which direct turbulent streams of water from the secondary cooling channel against the hot surface of the primary cooling channel to purge any vapor films formed thereon. The water exits the primary cooling channel through passages beneath the surface of the casting mold and exits the nozzle so as to bathe the exiting cast strip in coolant.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1977Date of Patent: October 31, 1978Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Larry P. Atkins, James R. Bish
