Publication number: 20120058853Abstract: A bearing lubrication device in a right angle gear reducer includes a gear housing having an interior portion and a lubricating fluid reservoir therein. An oil slinger, rotating pinion shaft, pinion shaft housing, and bearings for supporting the pinion shaft within the pinion shaft housing work together to provide a continuous supply of oil to the bearings. The pinion shaft includes two radially and longitudinally extending passageways therethrough which supply oil from a recess in one end of the pinion shaft to the bearings. Oil is slung from the reservoir into the recess of the rotating pinion shaft where it is forced outwardly and through the passageways to a chamber formed by the rotating pinion shaft, shaft housing and bearings. The roller bearings pump the oil from the chamber back to the fluid reservoir. Oil passageways in the shaft housing enable the return of oil from one bearing set.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 14, 2011Publication date: March 8, 2012Applicant: FAIRFIELD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, INC.Inventors: BENJAMIN WARREN SCHOON, JAMES R. Patent number: 5616097Abstract: A transmission comprising an input member, an output member and a planetary gear train is provided. The planetary gear train includes an output carrier and a spindle. The output carrier includes an outer conically tapered surface and the spindle includes a tapered inner surface having a variable inner diameter. The outer conically tapered surface of said output carrier includes a variable outer diameter. The output carrier is immovably affixed to said stationary spindle by forcibly press-fitting said variable outer diameter of said outer conically tapered surface of said output carrier into immoveable engagement with said variable inner diameter of said tapered inner surface of said spindle. The planetary gear train effects a speed reduction between said input member and said output member.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1995Date of Patent: April 1, 1997Assignee: Fairfield Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventor: James R. Patent number: 5489013Abstract: The present invention employs a hydraulically operable piston and intermediate member to control two clutches in a first planetary gear set. The first planetary gear set includes a first sun gear, a first planet gear, a first planet carrier and an inner ring gear. the first planet carrier includes a gear which drives a second planetary gear set resulting in rotation of a wheel hub. With hydraulic pressure applied to the piston and the intermediate member a first clutch is engaged locking an inner ring gear to a stationary outer ring effecting a high ratio reduction. With no hydraulic pressure applied to the piston and intermediate member a second clutch engages the first sun gear and the first planet carrier locking them together such that the first sun gear, first planet gear, first planet carrier and inner ring gear rotate in unison effecting a low ration reduction. With no hydraulic pressure applied, the first clutch is not engaged.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1995Date of Patent: February 6, 1996Assignee: Fairfield Mfg. Co., Inc.Inventors: Dennis L. Buuck, James R. Dammon

Patent number: 4245524Abstract: An epicyclic steering differential for use with a vehicle that is driven by tracks provides steering control and differential action to the vehicle by way of a set of differential cluster gears disposed about the pitch circle of the control gears with which the cluster set mates, engaging concurrently each of two adjacent cluster gears of the set, and driving two oppositely disposed drive gears that ultimately transmit power to the tracks. Each cluster gear has a pitch diameter equal in size to that of the control gears. The clusters are arrayed about the control gears so that the pitch diameter of adjacent clusters are mutually tangent and tangent also with the control gear pitch circle. In this way cluster gear transmits power at two points of meshing contact.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1978Date of Patent: January 20, 1981Assignee: Fairfield Manufacturing CompanyInventor: James R.
