Patent number: 9016696Abstract: An air seal for a server rack installed in a data center which delivers cool air to the fronts of racks and removes warm air at the back, where one or more of the racks are elevated by wheels or legs. A seal support member of rigid plastic and of right angle cross section has a horizontal portion and a vertical portion. The horizontal portion is adhesively secured to a downwardly facing surface at the bottom front and/or back of the rack. The horizontal portion is recessed at opposite ends to accommodate wheels or legs at opposite sides of the rack. The vertical portion extends across the full width of the rack and projects downward. A sealing strip of EPDM foam is adhesively secured to the vertical portion and is held flexed against the floor, forming a seal against the flow of by-pass air underneath the rack.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2011Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: Upsite Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Erez Borowsky, James R. Fink

Patent number: 8780555Abstract: A system for restricting mixing of air in a data center includes a plurality of racks, each of the racks having a front face and a back face. The system includes an enclosure for collecting air released from the back faces of the plurality of racks, the enclosure configured to substantially contain the air in an area between the first row and the second row and having a roof panel coupled to the first row of racks and the second row of racks configured to span a distance between the first row of racks and the second row of racks. The enclosure is configured to maintain a first air pressure inside of the enclosure that is substantially equal to a second air pressure outside the enclosure.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2012Date of Patent: July 15, 2014Assignee: American Power Conversion CorporationInventors: James R. Fink, John H. Bean, Stephen F. Held, Richard J. Johnson, Rollie R. Johnson

Patent number: 8708164Abstract: An air sealing device for installation in server racks to minimize the internal mixing of cooling air with warm air without passing through a server. The device has an elongated support strip of ABS or similar plastic material, to one portion of one side of which is secured a double side foam mounting strip, with an outside adhesive surface covered by a removable strip. A Neoprene foam, resiliently flexible sealing strip is adhesively secured by one edge margin thereof to the available surface portion of the support strip, on the same side as the mounting strip. The sealing strip can be mounted on a rack element to extend across an air space and into contact with a cover panel to prevent bypass air flow along sides of the rack. The device can also be mounted on a frame element to extend over surface areas thereof to close openings therein.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2011Date of Patent: April 29, 2014Assignee: Upsite Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Erez Borowsky, James R. Patent number: 7603874Abstract: A chiller for supplying chilled fluid for cooling a room includes two distinct power inputs. A critical power input is configured to supply power to a controller and to a pump in a chilled-fluid loop that circulates a cool working fluid through an air handler 34 to cool the air in the air handler. A non-critical power input is configured to supply power to a compressor and, possibly, other elements of a refrigeration loop that includes an evaporator, the compressor, and a condenser to provide refrigeration via an evaporation/condensation cycle. When power is lost to the non-critical power input, the critical power input can continue to independently power the circulation of the working fluid through the chilled-fluid loop to continue to provide a level of cooling in the air handler.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2005Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: American Power Conversion CorporationInventors: James R.
