Patent number: 10337638Abstract: The disclosure provides devices and methods for controlling the actuation rates of SPM valves by bi-directionally controlling the fluid which actuates the valve or by maintaining enclosed volumes which communicate with each other through predetermined restrictions as the valve actuates. These enclosed volumes can be completely isolated, depth compensated, share fluid with the pilot actuating fluid, or utilize the main system fluid. The restrictions can be modified to increase or decrease the actuation rates of the SPM valve. The disclosure also provides control over the main system fluid passage opening and closing positions as well as how rapidly the flow passage areas increase or decrease while opening or closing the valve.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2015Date of Patent: July 2, 2019Assignee: National Oilwell Varco, L.P.Inventors: James Ray Landrith, II, Frank B. Patent number: 9428994Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a monitor for a blowout preventer of a wellbore. The blowout preventer includes a housing, rams, and an actuator comprising a cylinder with a piston. The piston is operatively connectable with the ram and movable therewith. The monitor includes a monitor base operatively connectable to the cylinder (the monitor base having an interior side inside the cylinder and an exterior side outside the cylinder), an interior plate positionable inside the cylinder about the interior side of the base (the interior plate operatively connectable to the piston and movable therewith), an exterior plate positionable outside the cylinder about the exterior surface of the monitor base (the exterior plate coupled by magnets to the interior plate and rotatable therewith), and a trigger sensor operatively connectable about the monitor base and the exterior plate to detect rotation thereof whereby a position of the ram may be determined.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2014Date of Patent: August 30, 2016Assignee: National Oilwell Varco, L.P.Inventors: James Ray Landrith, II, Roger Dale Brown, Jonathan Lewis Buelow, Joseph James Liotta, Eric Trevor Ensley, Christopher Dale Johnson

Patent number: 9416628Abstract: The disclosure relates to an activator for a blowout preventer of a wellsite. The blowout preventer includes rams sealingly positionable about a tubular of a wellbore at the wellsite and driven by a circuit. The activator includes a cylinder, a trigger valve operatively connectable between the cylinder and the circuit, a piston, and a timing adjuster. The trigger valve includes a trigger to selectively pilot the circuit. The piston has a piston stroke extending between a retracted position and an extended position. The timing adjuster is engagable by the piston and adjustably positionable about the cylinder to define the retracted position of the piston stroke whereby a length of the piston stroke is adjustably defined.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2014Date of Patent: August 16, 2016Assignee: National Oilwell Varco, L.P.Inventors: James Ray Landrith, II, Matthew Christopher Quattrone

Patent number: 9394758Abstract: A valve, system and method for controlling flow of fluid about a wellsite component of a wellsite are provided. The wellsite component has a flowline to pass the fluid therethrough. The valve includes a valve housing, a cage having holes therethrough positionable in selective fluid communication with the flowline, a valve plate operatively connectable between the valve housing and the cage (the valve plate having a sealing surface thereon), and a spool assembly comprising a spool slidably positionable in the cage. The spool assembly is selectively positionable in sealing engagement with the sealing surface of the valve plate to define a sealing interface therebetween, and is movable between an inlet position defining a fluid intake path and an outlet position defining a fluid outtake path whereby the fluid is selectively diverted through the wellsite component.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2014Date of Patent: July 19, 2016Assignee: National Oilwell Varco, L.P.Inventors: James Ray Landrith, II, Matthew Christopher Quattrone
