  • Patent number: 10884778
Abstract: Techniques for managing dynamically scalable virtualized compute instances within a provider network are described. A dynamically scalable instance has a baseline performance level and a maximum performance level associated with a computing resource, such as a processor, a memory, a network interface, etc. In response to receive a request to launch a dynamically scalable instance, one or more services select a computer system to host the requested instance from a pool of instance-hosting computer systems of a provider network. The instance-hosting computer systems include a monitoring agent that reports computing resource usage data to the one or more services. The one or more services monitor the resource usage of the instance-hosting computer systems and migrate instances so that the dynamically scalable instances can operate up to the maximum level of performance.

  • Publication number: 20150335936
Abstract: An underwater exercise cycle that improves on existing designs through the use of a compact flywheel transmission with adjustable resistance. The invention allows for smooth and continuous pedaling across a range of distinct levels of resistance, thereby enhancing comfort, low-impact, and effectiveness of aquatic exercise.

  • Patent number: 8108657
Abstract: A computing system capable of handling floating point operations during program code conversion is described, comprising a processor including a floating point unit and an integer unit. The computing system further comprises a translator unit arranged to receive subject code instructions including at least one instruction relating to a floating point operation and in response to generate corresponding target code for execution on said processor. To handle floating point operations a floating point status unit and a floating point control unit are provided within the translator. These units are cause the translator unit to generate either: target code for performing the floating point operations directly on the floating point unit; or target code for performing the floating point operations indirectly, for example using a combination of the integer unit and the floating point unit. In this way the efficiency of the computing system is improved.

  • Publication number: 20070181647
Abstract: A method for welding and repairing cracks in metal parts is provided by subjecting the metal parts to be welded to friction stir welding and the cracks to be repaired to friction stir processing under conditions sufficient to provide a weld joint or crack repair having a preselected property or set of properties based upon the intended use of the weldment. The FSW and FSP methods are advantageous in joining and repairing metal structures and components in applications for natural gas transportation and storage, oil and gas well completion and production, and oil and gas refinery and chemical plants.

  • Publication number: 20070027036
Abstract: One embodiment of the invention is a variable density drilling mud comprising compressible particulate material in the drilling mud wherein the density of the drilling mud changes in response to pressure changes at depth. A second embodiment is a method for varying drilling mud density. The method comprises estimating the pore pressure and fracture gradient, and choosing a drilling mud with compressible materials wherein the effective mud weight of the drilling mud remains between the pore pressure and the fracture gradient in at least one interval of the wellbore. A third embodiment is an apparatus for drilling a wellbore.
