    Abstract: A grid-type face guard is attached to a football helmet by means of forehead spring clips and side spring clips. Forehead spring clips include means for preventing any downward movement of face guard in the event of a blow toward face guard. With this construction, the face guard will detach by a slight pull in any direction away from face guard yet not detach as a result of a blow toward the face guard. Injuries resulting from face masking are prevented.
