  • Patent number: 5534321
Abstract: This invention is directed to the fabrication of substrates for rigid information disks for use in a magnetic storage device, the surface of the substrate comprising a smooth area and a low friction area. Conveniently, the substrate will comprise a photonucleable glass wherein the low friction area will have a controlled textured surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 3, 1994
Date of Patent: July 9, 1996
    Assignee: Corning Incorporated
Inventors: James W. Alpha, Nicholas F. Borrelli
  • Patent number: 4971932
Abstract: The present invention is related to the fabrication of a magnetic memory storage device consisting essentially of a head pad and a rigid information disk, which disk consists essentially of a rigid substrate having a coating of magnetic media on the surface thereof facing the head pad. More particularly, this invention is directed to a substrate for use in the disk. The substrate is selected from two different groups of glass-ceramics: the first group contains a sheet silicate as the predominant crystal phase; and the second group contains a chain silicate as the predominant crystal phase.

  • Patent number: 4816299
Abstract: Compositions for encapsulating electronic components are provided which comprise a blend of a curable resin and an ultra-pure silica filler. The filler is composed of fused silica granules which are prepared from a gel of a silicon-containing organic compound, such as TEOS, and which have a uranium content of less than about 0.1 parts per billion and a thorium content of less than about 0.5 parts per billion. The compositions can be readily manufactured in commercial quantities at reasonable costs and are particular well-suite for encapsulating components, such as, high density RAMs, which are sensitive to alpha particles.

Date of Patent: March 28, 1989
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
Inventors: James W. Alpha, Paul M. Schermerhorn, Michael P. Teter
  • Patent number: 4180618
Abstract: The present invention is related to the fabrication of electronic devices wherein a thin film of silicon is deposited upon a substrate. More particularly, the invention is directed to such devices wherein the substrate therefor is an alkaline earth metal aluminosilicate glass consisting essentially, by weight, of about 55-75% SiO.sub.2, 5-25% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and at least one alkaline earth metal oxide selected from the group consisting of 9-15% CaO, 14-20% SrO, 18-26% BaO, and mixtures thereof in a total amount equivalent on a molar basis to 9-15% CaO.
