  • Patent number: 4214457
Abstract: A flexible coupling shaft which is suitable for plug-in installation between the splined output shaft of a turbine engine and the splined input shaft of a testing apparatus for the production test of the engine, includes a shaft member having opposed end flanges which are connected by: (1) bayonet connections to hub members, each having a splined central portion for receiving the splined shaft of either the engine or the testing device; and (2) flexible joint connections in the form of stacked arrays of flat metallic shims, with the stacked shims being separately connected respectively to the flange parts of the shaft and the associated hub. By this arrangement, axial misalignment between the splined input and output shafts is compensated by the splined interconnections, while lateral misalignments are compensated for by bending of the stacked shims which define a diaphragm-type coupling.

  • Patent number: 4161165
Abstract: This disclosure deals with a reciprocating piston for an internal combustion engine, particularly for a diesel engine. The piston is made of a relatively high strength metal such as iron, and no more material is used than is necessary to withstand the thermal and mechanical loads encountered in use. A circular piston dome is supported by a support part which extends between the dome and a pair of piston pin bosses. The bosses also support arcuate side thrust pads. A ring band is connected to the outer periphery of the dome by a connecting part which is relatively thin and flexible. The dome, the ring band and the support part are generally symmetrical about the axis of the piston. The support part is annular in cross section and may be conical, cylindrical, or partly conical and partly cylindrical.

  • Patent number: 4150651
Abstract: The disclosure illustrates a fuel control valve for a fuel system of a compression ignition engine which utilizes unit fuel injectors operating on the principle that the fuel pressure applied to the injectors determines the quantity of fuel injected into the engine cylinders. The fuel control valve is connected in the supply line for half of the injectors of the engine. The valve has a plunger which blocks off flow to these injectors whenever the fuel system pressure is below a predetermined level. When the pressure exceeds that level, the plunger displaces to a position where it permits flow to the injectors and offers a minimum restriction to flow. The pressure level is set at a level which reflects engine operation above idle but below normal engine operating conditions. The net effect is to substantially reduce the generation of white smoke during engine startup and while idling for extended periods of time while not affecting normal engine operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 3964141
Abstract: Integral structure crimping gears having timing gear teeth and crimping gear teeth of the same outside diameter, the tooth thickness of the crimping teeth being less than the tooth thickness of the timing teeth at any given diameter of the structure.
