Abstract: In an enterprise server environment having a uniform resource locator (URL) access management and control system. The server includes a user authentication logic to authenticate users attempting to connect to the server to access URL file and directories residing in the server. In one embodiment of the present invention, the user is provided with an identification token and a user URL access policy which allows the user's credentials to be validated and permitted access to a list of URLs in the directory server. In one embodiment of the present invention, a URL access enforcement logic uses the user's URL access policy to determine which URLs in the directory server a user may or may not access. The user's URL access policy may include an access deny or an access allow value which respectively denies or allows the user access to particular URL.

Abstract: A method for creating and managing a computer network management agent that includes a Java development management kit (“JDMK”)-created object is provided. In one embodiment, the method a JDMK agent object configured to provide computer network management functions is created. Address, type, and object class information are provided for the JDMK agent object. The JDMK agent object is installed on the computer network. In another embodiment, the method of the invention includes communicating with the JDMK agent object over the computer network.

In one aspect, the invention includes a system for implementing Java-based software network management objects configured to implement computer network management functions on a computer network. In one embodiment, the system of the invention includes a computer network management information server. The network management server performs communications using a first computer network management communications protocol. The system further includes a Java development management kit (“JDMK”) methods protocol adapter (“MPA”) that is configured to translate the first computer network management communications protocol into a JDMK communications protocol. A JDMK agent that is configured to communicate with the JDMK MPA using the JDMK communications protocol also is included.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and apparatus for discovering devices on a network. Active devices can be discovered in ARP tables from routers on the network. Pings can then be sent to the active devices for verification, or pings can be sent to devices at other addresses on the network. Devices can also be discovered by sending a batch of pings to addresses on the network and monitoring responses from those addresses over an interval. After the interval elapses, another batch of pings can be sent. The devices can be discovered by a host on the network or by a network manager. The network manager can add the discovered devices to a network topology database.
