  • Patent number: 6135678
Abstract: A cutting insert for the turning of grooves in metallic work pieces includes a rear shank portion and a cutting head projecting forwardly from the rear shank portion. The cutting head includes two side cutting edges converging forwardly, and a main cutting edge interconnecting the front ends of the side cutting edges. Each side cutting edge includes a plurality of spaced apart grooves formed therein, whereby each side cutting edge is noncontinuous.

  • Patent number: 5827017
Abstract: A metal cutting insert, especially for grooving operations includes a front cutting edge and two side cutting edges disposed on a top side of the insert. Two laterally spaced, upstanding ridges are disposed on the top side, each ridge extending generally longitudinally. A chipbreaker pit is formed in the top side between the two ridges. A front portion of the pit is deeper than a rear portion of the pit and intersects the front cutting edge to form a depression therein. The pit guides a chip longitudinally rearwardly toward an edge formed by the intersection of the front and rear pit sections. The ridges converge rearwardly in the vicinity of the intersection edge to form therewith a squeezing zone which squeezes the chip. A pair of burls are upstanding on the pit front portion in the vicinity of respective ones of the ridges.

  • Patent number: 5634745
Abstract: A turning insert includes corner surfaces each defined by at least five circle segments arranged in succession between adjacent side surfaces. Successive ones of the circle segments have different radii of curvature. The segments include a center or first segment intersected by a bisector of the corner surfaces, second and third segments disposed on respective sides of the first segment, and third and fourth segments disposed adjacent respective sides of said second and third segments, respectively. The first segment defines a first radius. The second and third segments defining equal second and third radii. The fourth and fifth segments defining equal fourth and fifth angles. Each of the fourth and fifth angles is larger than the first radius. The first radius is larger than each of the second and third angles.

  • Patent number: 5476346
Abstract: A cutting insert for chipforming machining of metal workpieces is disclosed, which comprises top and bottom surfaces and side walls therebetween. A land area extends around the entire insert and a descending surface joins the inner margin of the land. An elongated rib is provided at each corner region which rib terminates at a certain distance from the descending surface. Two distantly provided chipbreaking projections are provided at a forward nose portion of the elongated rib in order to facilitate chipbreaking at small depths of cut and moderate feed.
