Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and methodology to facilitate I/O access to a computer storage medium in a predictable and efficient manner. A scheduling system is provided that mitigates the problem of providing differing levels of performance guarantees for disk I/O in view of varying levels of data access requirements. In one aspect, the scheduling system includes an algorithm or component that provides high performance I/O updates while maintaining high throughput to the disk in a bounded or determined manner. This is achieved by dynamically balancing considerations of I/O access time and latency with considerations of data scheduling requirements. Also, the system provides latency boundaries for multimedia applications as well as managing accesses for other applications.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of altering a nucleic acid such as RNA or DNA. The method comprises fragmenting a parent nucleic acid strand to generate nucleic acid fragments. At least a subset of the fragments are ligated to generate shuffled nucleic acid strands. A selected strand is identified from the shuffled nucleic acid strands for a criterion. The methods of the invention can also be used to diversify proteins.

Abstract: Redundancy mechanisms are difficult to implement in a node holding connections spanning over a wide telecommunications network. Novel redundancy mechanisms to be implemented on a telecommunications node is described. In the mechanisms, an inactive device is maintained in hot standby with the active device so that a substantially hitless activity switch can be performed. The inactive device is kept in synchrony with the active device by updating the inactive device only when the status of connection has changed.

Upon activation of a pre-defined availability status a pre-defined filter rule is applied to the call and/or message in accordance with the activated availability status. A call and/or message handling action associated with the activated availability status is executed.
