Patent number: 10507358Abstract: A method, apparatus, and a computer program for monitoring a fitness exercise are described. A plurality of heart-rate variability values and a plurality of exertion parameter values are measured during an exercise measured. The heart rate variability values correlate with the exertion parameter values through a human physiological mechanism, and the exertion parameter values characterize the physical exertion of the exercise. A mathematical correspondence is then constructed from the plurality of measured heart rate variability values and associated exertion parameter values. The mathematical correspondence describes correlation between the heart rate variability values and the exertion parameter values and the user's physiological state during the exercise. Then, the physical exertion of the exercise is monitored by applying the mathematical correspondence.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 2011Date of Patent: December 17, 2019Assignee: POLAR ELECTRO OYInventors: Hannu Kinnunen, Jarkko Haataja, Tero Posio

Patent number: 9330238Abstract: Performance intensity zones are disclosed. An apparatus comprises one or more processors, and one or more memories storing instructions, that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to: obtain performance intensity data measured from a user with at least one measurement sensor during a first activity and/or a second activity; and classify the performance intensity data in relation to a plurality of predetermined performance intensity zones, wherein each performance intensity zone is predetermined by a first numerical range for the first activity, and a second numerical range for the second activity, wherein the first activity and the second activity are different types of sports or different types of physical activities.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2012Date of Patent: May 3, 2016Assignee: POLAR ELECTRO OYInventors: Juho Rahko, Hannu Kinnunen, Harri Maatta, Jarkko Haataja, Tanja Kalliojarvi, Ville Peltola

Patent number: 8538691Abstract: A portable electronic device comprises a controller and a display. The controller receives vector data on a position of a user of the portable device from a satellite positioning sensor associated with the user, and scalar data on movement of the user from at least one motion sensor associated with the user. The controller stores data based on the vector data and feeds a scalar parameter proportional to the scalar data to the display. The display displays the scalar parameter.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2009Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: Polar Electro OyInventors: Jarkko Haataja, Urpo Niemelä, Tero Posio

Patent number: 8206268Abstract: An apparatus, a method, and a computer program are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a processor. The processor is configured to obtain exercise data of a user from a measurement sensor, to identify a present exercise phase of an exercise from among a plurality of exercise phases on the basis of the exercise data, and to select a relevant display mode from among a plurality of display modes on the basis of the present exercise phase and a mapping between the display modes and the exercise phases, wherein the relevant display mode defines a set of display elements associated with the present exercise phase to be displayed to the user.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2011Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignee: Polar Electro OyInventor: Jarkko Haataja
