Patent number: 10341891Abstract: When a given user equipment (UE) has a plurality K of cells currently serving it, in various embodiments there is an algorithm for triggering the UE to wirelessly send a cell measurement report. The algorithm utilizes a parameter whose value is dependent on the number K of cells currently in the UE's active set. The UE updates K anytime a new cell is added to, or a serving cell is removed from, the UE's active set. In various examples the parameter is an offset that operates such that for adding a new cell increasing values of K make it more difficult to satisfy the algorithm. One example has the offset's value computed using a slope value provided by the network and a default offset value; another has the offset's value computed using maximum and minimum allowable values of both K and the offset which are provided by the network.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2015Date of Patent: July 2, 2019Assignee: Nokia Technologies OyInventors: Ingo Viering, Jarmo Makinen, Fasil Berhanu Tesema, Ahmad Awada, Andreas Lobinger

Patent number: 7999737Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for adjusting the beam direction of an antenna. The device has a source connection terminal to be connected to a signal source and at least two feed connection terminals to be connected to antenna element feed points. A feed line structure is elongated in a main direction at a distance from and in parallel to a fixed ground plane on at least one side of said feed line structure, wherein a movable dielectric element is located between said feed line structure and said ground plane so as to change the signal phase of signal components being transferred between said source connection terminal and the respective feed connection terminals. Patent number: 7898489Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for adjusting the beam direction of a beam radiated from a stationary array of antenna elements. Antenna element feed points are coupled to a common source via a feed line structure having a source connection and feed connection terminals to be connected to the antenna element feed points, the feed line structure being at a distance from and in parallel to a fixed ground plane. A movable element is located adjacent to the feed line structure to change the signal phase of signal components being transferred between the source connection and the respective feed connection terminals. The movable element is movable for effecting a phase shift of the signal components to adjust the beam direction. The device is provided with a detection arrangement for detecting the absolute position of the movable element.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2006Date of Patent: March 1, 2011Assignee: Powerwave Technologies Sweden ABInventors: Jarmo Mäkinen, Olov Ekervik, Daniel Åkesson, Tord Liljevik, Johan Dagerhamn, Erik Östlind

Patent number: 7649872Abstract: An architectural solution in which standalone ad-hoc network cells are used as an extension of the backbone infrastructure in terms of network architecture or/and its service capabilities is provided. These Ad-Hoc networks will integrate to the Internet via cellular and other access networks. This integration brings new possibilities to network operators and ISP's. In its extended architecture, it is envisaged that the mobility issues are handled by utilizing the IP mobility capabilities, taking into account the mobile mesh Ad-Hoc specific requirements. A trunk node is elected from among nodes within a service area of an Ad-Hoc domain that underlies an access domain. The trunk node acts as a gateway between the nodes within the Ad-Hoc domain and a backbone access network. The election can be performed by the trunk node itself or by a radio resource management entity.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2005Date of Patent: January 19, 2010Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Siamak Naghian, Tapio Lindstrom, Tero Karkkainen, Jarmo Makinen, Keijo Lahetkangas, Kai Mustonen

Patent number: 7647062Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling transmission power in a radio system, preferably in a radio link system. To establish a power control mechanism which is capable of taking into account the various phenomena affecting the performance of the radio connection and which can also respond to degrading signal quality before bit errors begin to occur, pseudo errors, i.e. decision-making instants at which a symbol error nearly occurred, are monitored at the receiving end. The transmission power is then decreased when the rate of the pseudo errors is below a predetermined threshold and increased when pseudo errors occur so that a predetermined criterion is fulfilled.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2001Date of Patent: January 12, 2010Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Jarmo Makinen, Jari Rahkala

Patent number: 7430188Abstract: This invention relates to data transmission in a microwave link system particularly through point-to-multipoint connections. The arrangement according to the invention utilizes both frequency and time division duplex arrangement to simplify substation structures. In accordance with the invention a substation transmits at different times than it receives, and uses different frequencies for the transmission and reception. The central station, in turn, includes a duplexer unit, whereby it can both transmit and receive simultaneously when the transmission and reception frequencies are sufficiently apart. Such an arrangement achieves advantages of the time division duplex arrangement, such as e.g. an inexpensive substation structure, without the drawbacks related to the time division duplex arrangement.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2000Date of Patent: September 30, 2008Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventor: Jarmo Makinen

Publication number: 20050282570Abstract: The objective of the invention is to increase the potential hop density of single frequency TDD radio links by allowing a set of closely located terminals to use a single channel. This is possible when transmission and reception periods of the terminals are synchronized so that the transmit period of any of the terminals in a terminal group does not overlap with the receive period of any of the terminals in the group. Synchronization is achieved by selecting at least one terminal in a hub site as a super master terminal. This terminal gives timing through a common bus to the rest of the terminals in the group These terminals use the received timing for adjusting their own timing i.e. for adjusting the starting moment and ending moment of the transmission and reception periods in such a manner that none of terminals is sending a burst while another terminal is receiving.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 29, 2005Publication date: December 22, 2005Inventors: Otto Pulkkinen, Jarmo Makinen, Lauri Kuru
