  • Patent number: 9642159
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus to help facilitate providing of multiple Downlink Control Information (DCI) messages that separately schedule downlink communication of bearer data to a wireless communication device (WCD) in a given sub-frame, to help ensure receipt of such multiple DCI messages by the WCD. As disclosed, a base station will include in at least one such DCI message an indication that there is in the sub-frame at least one other such DCI message. When the WCD receives and reads the one such DCI message, the WCD may thereby learn from the indication that there is at least one other such DCI message in the sub-frame. The WCD may then search for and find the at least other such DCI message in the sub-frame and/or may use the indication as a basis to verify receipt of all such DCI messages in the sub-frame.

  • Patent number: 9629041
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system to help rectify errors in operation of a wireless communication system. When a base station detects one or more errors in operation of the system, the base station will automatically request and receive from an adjacent base station a set of one or more operational parameters that the adjacent base station is set to provide, and the base station will substitute the received operational parameters for those that the base station is set to provide to UEs. This process may thereby help to avoid recurrence of certain errors in operation of the system.

  • Patent number: 9629035
Abstract: An access terminal establishes a session with a first radio access network (RAN). As a result, the access terminal receives a Unicast Access Terminal Identifier (UATI) assigned by the first RAN and establishes configuration settings for radio communications between the access terminal and the first RAN. The access terminal moves from the first RAN to a second RAN. Before the access terminal has a session established with the second RAN, the access terminal receives a request from a user to originate a call. In response, the access terminal sends the second RAN a connection request that includes the UATI assigned by the first RAN. The second RAN evaluates the UATI included in the connection request and determines that it was previously assigned to the access terminal by another RAN. Based on this determination, the second RAN grants the connection request by assigning a traffic channel to the access terminal.

  • Patent number: 9629187
Abstract: A method and system for dynamically selecting call setup procedure based on channel quality. While a wireless communication device (WCD) is being served by a first radio access network (RAN), a network node receives an indication of a communication quality of the at least one channel used by the first RAN to serve the given WCD. Then, the network node selects a call setup procedure for establishing a call to be served by a second RAN based on the received indication of the communication quality of the at least one channel, where the selected call setup procedure comprises the given WCD transitioning to be served with the call by the second RAN. Next, the network node signals to invoke setup of the call using the selected call setup procedure.

  • Patent number: 9629034
Abstract: A method and system to help avoid a failed eCSFB call setup in the presence of handover. While a WCD is being served by a base station of a first network, the base station may detect both a fallback trigger and a handover trigger. The fallback trigger may be a trigger to initiate a fallback setup procedure, where the fallback setup procedure involves execution of a sequence of steps including a particular step. The handover trigger may be a trigger to initiate a handover procedure. The base station determines that the handover trigger was detected before execution of the particular step of the fallback setup procedure. Responsive to determining that the handover trigger was detected before execution of the particular step, the base station (a) foregoes the fallback setup procedure and (b) transmits to the WCD a message directing the WCD to establish communication with the second network.

  • Patent number: 9591548
Abstract: In accordance with the disclosed methods and systems, while providing a service that enables user equipment devices (UEs) being served by a first network to engage in signaling with a second network via the first network, a controller or other network entity may detect an error condition associated with the service, such as a threshold-high level of signaling or an interface failure. In response to detecting the error condition, base stations in the first network may then direct one or more UEs being served by the first network to refrain from using the given service. As a result, the one or more UEs may refrain from using the given service and may instead use another approach to engage in signaling with the second network, which may enable the one or more UEs to circumvent the error condition until it gets remedied.

  • Patent number: 9591648
Abstract: An example embodiment may involve defining an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) wireless air interface that contains time-division multiplexed subframes. A primary signaling channel may be formed by modulation symbols that are statically allocated to fixed time positions of each subframe, and span contiguous subcarrier frequencies. A secondary signaling channel may be defined in the OFDM wireless air interface. The secondary signaling channel may be formed by modulation symbols that are dynamically allocated to time positions of one or more subcarrier frequencies, and span at least two consecutive subframes of the OFDM wireless air interface. A signaling message may be transmitted, on the primary signaling channel, to one or more WCDs. The signaling message may be transmitted in a first subframe of the consecutive subframes, and may identify the secondary signaling channel.

  • Patent number: 9578640
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and corresponding apparatus to make use of hybrid-ARQ repetition factors as a way to differentiate service quality to various mobile terminals. Depending on a mobile terminal's subscription service class, such as the mobile terminal's PLMN, the mobile terminal may be made to use a particular hybrid-ARQ repetition factor. For instance, a mobile terminal of a high service class may be made to use a low hybrid-ARQ repetition factor, which may help the mobile terminal experience less downlink transmission delay and thus a higher downlink data rate. Whereas, a mobile terminal of a low service class may be made to use a high hybrid-ARQ repetition factor, which may cause the mobile terminal to experience more downlink transmission delay and thus a lower downlink data rate, and may further free up downlink transmission resources to facilitate better service for other mobile terminals.

  • Patent number: 9572167
Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus for assigning resources to a wireless communication device that experienced a call drop. A RAN may receive an origination request from a mobile station and make a first determination that within a predetermined amount of time prior to receiving the origination request the mobile station experienced a call drop. Responsive to making the first determination, the RAN may make a second determination that the RAN should allocate a first extent of resources to the mobile station rather than allocating a second extent of resources to the mobile station. The first extent of resources may be less than the second extent of resources. Responsive to making the second determination, the RAN may allocate the first extent of resources to the mobile station in response to the origination request rather than allocating the second extent of resources to the mobile station in response to the origination request.

  • Patent number: 9560666
Abstract: As disclosed, while a wireless communication device (WCD) is idling on a particular carrier frequency of a base station, the base station may receive a message broadcast by that base station, the message specifying multiple relative sets of priority levels defined for a set of carrier frequencies and correlating each of the multiple relative sets of priority levels with respective different WCD operational characteristics. In particular, the message may specify a first correlation of one relative set of priority levels with one WCD operational characteristic and includes a second correlation of a different relative set of priority levels with a different WCD operational characteristic. The WCD may select one of the relative sets of priority levels responsive to the WCD having a WCD operational characteristic that the message correlates with the selected relative set of priority levels. The WCD may then apply the selected relative set of priority levels.

  • Patent number: 9560550
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for facilitating mitigation of interference using beamforming techniques are provided. In some embodiments, interference periodicity and interference duration associated with interference of a radar beam are used to determine an extent of time during which a lobe of a communication tower is to be modified in power, direction, or a combination thereof. Upon an occurrence of the extent of time, the lobe of the communication tower is modified in power, direction, or a combination thereof so that the lobe does not interfere with a radar beam emitted from a radar remote from the communication tower.

  • Patent number: 9560660
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system of managing an allocation of resources in a wireless communication system. According to the disclosure, a base station may receive or otherwise determine an indication of radio frequency (RF) conditions being perceived by a given user equipment device (UE). Based on that indication, the base station may make a decision of whether to use a first resource limitation or a second resource limitation for data transmissions to the given UE, where the second resource limitation generally allows for a lesser extent of resources to be allocated than the first resource limitation in weaker RF conditions. For instance, the base station may decide to use a bit-rate limitation for threshold strong RF conditions and a resource-block limitation for threshold weak RF conditions. Thereafter, the base station may allocate resources for a data transmission to the given UE in accordance with the decision.

  • Patent number: 9544829
Abstract: A network node receives from a mobile terminal being served by a first coverage area a measurement report indicating signal level of a second coverage area detected by the mobile terminal. The network node then makes a determination, by considering PLMNs of the mobile terminal and of the coverage areas, of (i) whether the mobile node is a home mobile node of the first coverage area and (ii) whether the mobile node is a home mobile node of the second coverage area. Based on that determination, the network node then selects a handoff threshold. And based on the handoff threshold and the reported signal level, the network node decides whether to trigger handoff of the mobile terminal from the first coverage area to the second coverage area. The network node then triggers the handoff if the decision is to do so.

  • Patent number: 9544875
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system to manage paging channels in a wireless communication network. When the network encounters a situation where the network is to transmit an access response message in a coverage area to a mobile station, the network will determine whether the mobile station is in an access handoff state. If not, the network will transmit the message to the mobile station on a paging channel selected based on the mobile station's identifier. Otherwise, the network will transmit the message to the mobile station on both that paging channel and a default paging channel (e.g., primary channel) selected without consideration of the mobile station's identifier. This process can help avoid an access handoff failure. Further, a radio access network may opt to use the default paging channel in response to the wireless coverage area having a different number of paging channels than an adjacent coverage area.
