Patent number: 11794285Abstract: The concepts described herein provide a method, system, and apparatus for joining, via welding, first and second members fabricated from an aluminum alloy including aluminum, zinc, and manganese, such as 7000-series aluminum alloys, and a resultant workpiece. A junction is formed by a first member being disposed contiguously to a second member. A welding machine generates a weld pool at the junction that includes liquified aluminum alloy. An ultrasonic transducer directs ultrasonic energy in proximity to the weld pool. In some embodiments, an electro-magnetic transducer directs electro-magnetic energy in proximity to the weld pool. The first member is fused to the second member at the junction upon solidification of the weld pool.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2021Date of Patent: October 24, 2023Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Daniel J. Wilson, Qigui Wang, Liang Wang, Huaxin Li, Jason J. Coryell, Joshua L. Solomon

Publication number: 20220314377Abstract: A sheet blank includes a core substrate having a generally planar shape with opposed first and second sides. The core substrate is made of high-strength steel containing at least two of ferrite, martensite, bainite, and austenite and having an ultimate tensile strength of at least 490 MPa. A respective decarburized layer of the high-strength steel is formed on each of the first and second sides of the core substrate, wherein each respective decarburized layer contains a minimum ferrite content of at least 80 volume % ferrite and has a respective thickness of 5 to 100 microns. A respective transition layer of the high-strength steel may be formed between the core substrate and each respective decarburized layer, with each transition layer having a respective inner transition layer abutting the core substrate and a respective outer transition layer abutting the respective decarburized layer.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 6, 2021Publication date: October 6, 2022Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: MingFeng Shi, Adam D. Publication number: 20220162721Abstract: A method of forming a component includes providing a work-piece blank from a formable material. The method also includes engaging the work-piece blank with a transfer device. The method additionally includes austenitizing the work-piece blank in the transfer device via heating the blank to achieve austenite microstructure therein. The method also includes transferring the austenitized blank to a forming press using the transfer device. The method additionally includes forming the component via the forming press from the austenitized blank and quenching the formed component. A work-piece blank transfer system includes a transfer device having clamping arm(s) for engaging, holding, transferring, and releasing the work-piece blank. The transfer device also includes a heating element configured to austenitize the work-piece blank via heating the blank to achieve austenite microstructure therein.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 23, 2020Publication date: May 26, 2022Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Shane M. Patent number: 9677145Abstract: A press-hardened steel component and a method of producing the same. In one form, a workpiece that will be formed into the component includes a coating that is pre-diffused with metal from the workpiece substrate. Examples of such protective coatings may include aluminum-based coatings, as well as from aluminum and silicon combinations. The pre-diffusion of the workpiece permits it to be subjected to the high heating rate of a subsequent press hardening operation without causing localized melting or vaporization of the protective coating.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2012Date of Patent: June 13, 2017Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Jason J. Coryell, Paul J. Belanger
