Patent number: 11990687Abstract: An electronic device may include an antenna disposed on a substrate. The antenna may include a ring of conductive traces, a fed arm, and an unfed arm. The fed arm and the unfed arm may extend from opposing segments of the ring. The ring may be coupled to ground by fences of conductive vias extending through the substrate. The first arm may have a first radiating edge. The second arm may have a second radiating edge. The first radiating edge may be separated from the second radiating edge by a gap. The first arm may indirectly feed the second arm via near-field electromagnetic coupling across the gap. The first and second arms may collectively radiate in an ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency band.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2022Date of Patent: May 21, 2024Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Alden T Rush, Soroush Akbarzadeh, Hongfei Hu, Han Wang, Javier Gomez Tagle, Ming Chen, Carlo Di Nallo, Mattia Pascolini, Erdinc Irci, Ali Pourghorban Saghati

Patent number: 11114748Abstract: An electronic device may have peripheral conductive housing structures divided into first and second segments. First and second antennas may be formed from the segments and may be fed using a flexible printed circuit structure. The structure may include a first substrate attached to the first segment, a second substrate soldered to the first substrate and attached to the second segment, and a third substrate soldered to the second substrate. Third and fourth antennas may be formed on the first substrate whereas fifth and sixth antennas are be formed on the second substrate. The second substrate may be folded and may have a lateral area oriented perpendicular to the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth antennas. Modularly forming the structure in this way may maximize the flexibility with which the structure can accommodate other components, thereby minimizing the space consumption associated with mounting and feeding the antennas without sacrificing wireless performance.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2019Date of Patent: September 7, 2021Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Salih Yarga, Soroush Akbarzadeh, Jonathan M. Lee, Gareth L. Rose, Javier Gomez Tagle, Joshua G. Nickel, Mattia Pascolini, Ian A. Spraggs, Daniel W. Jarvis, Sunitha Seshadri

Patent number: 10141631Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry. The wireless circuitry may include an antenna. The electronic device may have a housing in which control circuitry and radio-frequency transceiver circuitry is mounted. The transceiver circuitry may be used to transmit and receive radio-frequency signals with the antenna. The housing may have a housing wall with a locally thinned portion aligned with the antenna. The antenna may have a sheet metal layer attached to a plastic cavity with a layer of adhesive. Recesses in a printed circuit may receive prongs formed from a sheet metal layer. The plastic carrier may have cavities separated by ribs. The sheet metal layer may form a planar inverted-F antenna resonating element, a ground plane, a return path between the resonating element and ground plane, and a feed path that extends along one of the ribs and into an opening in the printed circuit.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2015Date of Patent: November 27, 2018Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Francesco Merli, Yi Jiang, Boon W. Shiu, Carlo Di Nallo, Javier Gomez Tagle, Mattia Pascolini

Patent number: 9190725Abstract: A test system may include a master test station and slave test stations. The test stations may receive devices under test such as portable wireless electronic devices. Each test station may have adjustable antenna structures coupled to test equipment. The adjustable antenna structures may include antenna support structures on which test antennas are mounted and rail along which the antenna support structures and test antennas are moved by a pneumatic positioner. A rotatable platform may be provided in each test station to support the device under test in that test station. By making a series of over-the-air test measurements in the master test station while adjusting the antenna system and device positioning system, a satisfactory location for the active test antenna and device position may be identified. This configuration may then be used in performing single-point over-the-air tests in the slave test stations.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2013Date of Patent: November 17, 2015Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Diego C. Hernandez, Indranil Sen, Chun-Lung Chen, Javier Gomez Tagle
