  • Patent number: 6708680
Abstract: Self-ignition control in a four-stroke internal-combustion engine, comprising several intake means and several exhaust means per cylinder. In order to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions during part-load operation, the exhaust means of each cylinder open (1 and 2) respectively during the exhaust phase so as to discharge the burnt gases from the cylinder and during the intake phase so as to reintroduce burnt gases into the cylinder, the time of opening (3) of an intake means being deferred so to allow fresh gas to pass into the cylinder after partial filling thereof with the burnt gases.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 9, 2001
Date of Patent: March 23, 2004
    Assignee: Institut Francais du Petrole
    Inventors: Jacques Lavy, Jean-Charles Dabadie
  • Patent number: 6431128
Abstract: The present invention relates to an engine and to a process for controlling the self-ignition combustion of a four-stroke engine comprising several cylinders (1) having each at least one intake means (2) comprising an intake line and at least one exhaust means (3) comprising an exhaust line. During partial load running of the engine, an amount of exhaust gas is taken from the exhaust line of a cylinder and an amount of burnt gas is transferred to the intake line of at least one other cylinder. In a variant, a transfer line is common to all the cylinders.

Date of Patent: August 13, 2002
    Assignee: Institut Francais du Petrole

  • Patent number: 6427644
Abstract: The present invention relates to a controlled self-ignition combustion process in a four-stroke engine having plural cylinders (1) having each at least a first intake (2) and at least a first exhaust (3). The process according to the invention during partial load operation, transfers, via at least one additional port (4) of each cylinder and an exhaust gas transfer, exhaust gases from a cylinder in the exhaust phase to another cylinder in the intake phase. The present invention further relates to a multicylinder four-stroke engine working on controlled self-ignition, allowing implementation of the above-described process.

  • Patent number: 5752477
Abstract: The present invention relates to a two-stroke engine comprising at least a cylinder (111) in which a piston (112) moves and one end of which communicates with a pump sump (115) crossed by the crankshaft (114) of the engine, a capacity under pressure (87) opening at one end into said pump sump, at the other end into the combustion chamber (113) of cylinder (111), a valve (86) providing an intermittent seal between chamber (113) and capacity (87), a means (88) for carburetting the gases passing through said capacity (87), a means (82) for controlling the motion of said valve (86), comprising a supple membrane (89) separating a first chamber (95a) and a second chamber (95b), said membrane being connected to the valve rod. According to the invention, said engine further comprises a first means (92) for connecting the second chamber (95b) to the cylinder, the means being intended to retard the opening of said valve (86) by controlling the pressure in said chamber (95b).
