Abstract: A safety and/or control device for an electric cooking appliance, the appliance having a case defining a cooking enclosure and a component for heating the enclosure. The device includes: at least one switch arranged to close a circuit for supplying current to the heating component, this switch including a case and an actuating button, at least one sensing element which is movable between a safe position, corresponding to a predetermined configuration for placing the appliance into operation, and an unsafe position, corresponding to another configuration in which the appliance should not be placed into operation, and, optionally, a control unit accessible from outside the case and movable between an on position and an off position. The switch can be operated to close the current supply circuit in response to the sensing element and the control unit, or in response to two sensing elements, when the element and the control unit or both sensing elements are each in a defined position.

Abstract: An electric cooking appliance having a housing receiving a removable bowl, a heating element in thermal contact with the bowl when the bowl is seated in the housing, a heat adjuster, an ultimate safety switch to act in case of failure of the heat adjuster, and a thermal limit switch mounted in the housing. The thermal limit switch is set to be triggered before the ultimate safety switch if the bowl in not seated in the housing.

Abstract: Peptide sequences and analogs thereof based on amino acid motifs in band 3 which are effective in reducing the adhesiveness of pathologically adhesive red blood cells. One class of peptide sequences are characterized by the sequence motif Z.sup.1 xKxxx+ (SEQ ID NO:45), wherein Z.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of tyrosine, phenylalanine and alanine; x is an unobstructive residue and + is a positively charged residue (e.g., K or P--H). These peptides are used to reduce adhesiveness in the treatment of sickle cell disease, thalassemia and diabetes. A second class of peptide sequences are characterized by the sequence motif Z.sup.2 Z.sup.3 Z.sup.2 -x-xxxx- (SEQ ID NO:46), wherein Z.sup.2 represents a hydrophobic residue, x is an unobstructive residue and - is a negatively charged residue. These peptides can be used to reduce adhesiveness in the treatment of malria, sickle cell disease, thalassemia and diabetes.

Abstract: A cooking appliance, in particular a heating appliance for foodstuffs, for example for deep-frying in oil, including a removably mounted bowl (7) surrounded by a spaced outer skirt (2), a heating device (15, 17, 18) arranged under the bowl (7), and a heating control member (30). The appliance further has an outer bowl (10) at least partially surrounding all the faces of the removably mounted bowl (7), the outer bowl (10) being mounted between the removably mounted bowl (7) and the outer skirt (2) and being spaced therefrom, while the heating device (15, 17, 18) is fixedly mounted on the outer bowl (10).

Abstract: The field of the invention concerns heating or cooking appliances. The cooking appliance comprises a casing (2) enclosing an integrated fixed or removable cooking receptacle (1) and heating means thermally connected to the cooking receptacle (1), means (3) for detecting, firstly, whether the cooking receptacle (1) is substantially empty and, in this case, opening the electrical supply circuit of the heating means, and secondly, for detecting whether the cooking receptacle (1) is filled so as to attain the predefined minimum weight, and, in this case, closing the electrical supply circuit of the heating means. According to the invention, the detection means (30) are operable by placing the cooking receptacle (1) in the casing, and by closing the lid (3).

Abstract: In an appliance for cooking or frying foodstuffs in a fluid, comprising: a cooking tank; an external housing surrounding the cooking tank, providing an external wall of the appliance and having an opening; a heating member in thermal communication with the cooking tank; pilot units for controlling operation of the appliance; and a support plate carrying at least a part of the pilot units and removably mounted in the opening in the housing to constitute a portion of the external wall of the appliance, the pilot units including a heating control unit for controlling the temperature of fluid in the cooking tank, mounted on the plate in heat exchange communication with the cooking tank.
