  • Patent number: 7437683
Abstract: An apparatus and method for presenting electronic documents to users in the form of immersive reading pages. Immersive reading pages mimic the presentation that is provided by printed paper documents. There are no traditional user interface features displayed to the user, yet the user has access to the enhanced functionality that can be provided by computer-implemented documents. In an illustrative embodiment, the user has access to intrabook (or inside-the-book), interbook (or outside-the-book) navigational features, and content interactive features, such as highlighting, annotating, drawing or looking up definitions or synonyms of words in the document. Enhanced functionality is transparently associated with elements on the immersive reading page such that the immersive reading page is without visible indicators of the association. A training mode for permitting the user to learn the transparent association behind the immersive reading pages provides visual guides to the user.

  • Patent number: 7363008
Abstract: The invention provides methods for autonomous detection and adaptation with respect to an interfering signal on a frequency channel to assist a wireless device on a wireless network in choosing an appropriate frequency channel. According to embodiments, a method determines an appropriate channel by first detecting whether there is an interfering signal on a frequency channel over the wireless network, then retrieving data from the interfering signal to retrieve protocol identification information. Prior to determining whether to transmit over the frequency channel, the method calls for determining whether the identified protocol of the interfering signal is a predetermined protocol.

  • Patent number: 6928428
Abstract: For distributed querying of confidential information, a querying data structure is constructed from the confidential information on the computer at which the confidential information resides. The querying data structure opaquely encapsulates queries on the confidential information as a set of query hashes and answer pairs. The querying data structure is distributed to other computers where the distributed query processing is to be performed. The query is performed on such other computers by hashing the query terms, using the resulting query hash as a look up index to the associated answer in the querying data structure, and acting on the answer. A strictly one-way hash is used to prevent recovery of the original inputs to the query hashes in the query data structure by reverse hash.

  • Publication number: 20020184153
Abstract: The present invention involves a new system and process for allowing automatic disclosure of at least one common interest between at least two entities while keeping non-common interests undisclosed or secret from other entities. Further, unlike conventional schemes for disclosing or sharing common interests, such disclosure or non-disclosure of interests is accomplished in accordance with the present invention without the use of a third party, mediation, or trusted agent type application or process for comparing shared or common interests. Consequently, in accordance with the present invention, there is no database, application, process, etc. that is external to any entity to which the interests of that entity is disclosed or revealed for the purposes of determining whether any of the entities interests match those of any other entity.
