  • Patent number: 8092068
Abstract: Optical assembly includes a generally planar light output surface located on a first major plane, and a generally planar second surface located on a second major plane approximately parallel to the first major plane and superimposed thereon. Both the light output surface and the second surface have respective first and second patterns of well defined optical elements that are quite small in relation to the length and width of the optical assembly. The optical elements of the first pattern have an apex angle formed by a first sloped surface that is larger in an area closer to at least one light input edge of the optical assembly and smaller in another area further away from the light input edge.

  • Publication number: 20110309735
Abstract: A light bulb has a light guide configured as a hollow body surrounding an internal volume. The light guide is open at its proximal and distal ends, and has inner and outer surfaces and an end surface at the proximal end that provides a light input edge. A solid-state light source is optically coupled to the light input edge of the light guide such that light from the solid-state light source travels in the light guide by total internal reflection. The solid-state light source is thermally coupled to a housing at the proximal end of the light guide. The housing contains vents for air flow and convection cooling through the internal volume. Light-extracting optical elements at least one of the inner surface and the outer surface of the light guide are for extracting light from the light guide.

  • Patent number: 8029708
Abstract: A method of forming a varying pattern of optical elements on or in at least one side of an optical panel member involves cutting or forming a pattern or patterns of cavities in a cylindrical or curved substrate or in a sleeve or sleeve segment of the substrate that corresponds to a desired pattern and shape of optical elements to be formed on or in the optical member. The substrate or sleeve or sleeve segment containing the desired pattern or patterns of optical element shaped cavities or depositions or mirror copies or inverse copies thereof is used in production tooling or as a master for production tooling to form the corresponding pattern of optical elements on or in at least the one side of the optical panel member.

  • Publication number: 20110222310
Abstract: Light emitting assembly comprises a light transition member and a light source mounted or positioned within the light transition member. A transparent light emitting panel member conducts light received from the light source. On or in one or more surfaces of the panel member is a pattern of light extracting deformities. A cavity or recess in the panel member is shaped to receive the light transition member to facilitate placement of the light source in a modular manner.

  • Patent number: 7963687
Abstract: Light emitting assembly includes an optical conductor having a pattern of deformities on or in front and back sides of the optical conductor to cause light to be emitted from a light emitting surface on at least one of the sides. At least one of the deformities varies, and at least one planar or curved refractive surface is aligned with at least one light source to redirect a portion of the light from the light source entering the optical conductor in a predetermined manner to cause the light emitted from the light emitting surface to pass through an optical film, which redirects the light through a liquid crystal display with no loss.

  • Publication number: 20110134362
Abstract: An optical assembly comprises a light emitting panel having a light output surface and a light redirecting film located to receive light emitted from the light output surface. The light output surface has a non-uniform directional light output distribution. The light redirecting film has a pattern of individual optical elements of well defined shape that vary at different locations on the light redirecting film to redistribute the light received from the light output surface within a desired light ray angle distribution.

  • Patent number: 7914196
Abstract: Light redirecting film systems comprise a backlight having deformities that cause a majority of the light entering the input edge of the backlight to be emitted from a light output surface of the backlight. In close proximity to the light output surface is a light redirecting film that has a pattern of individual optical elements of well-defined shape to redistribute the light emitted by the light output surface toward a direction normal to the film.

  • Publication number: 20110063873
Abstract: Optical assembly comprises a light emitting assembly comprising a light emitting panel and an LED light source, and a transreflector film or sheet attached to the light emitting panel. The light emitting panel has a first pattern of optical deformities, and the transreflector sheet or film has a second pattern of optical deformities. The optical deformities of the second pattern are smaller in length and width than the transreflector film or sheet, and the optical deformities of the first pattern are aligned with the optical deformities of the second pattern.

  • Publication number: 20110058390
Abstract: Optical assembly comprises a light emitting panel having at least one light source positioned adjacent to at least one light input edge located at or near a corner of the panel and at least one light output surface for emitting light. In close proximity to the light output surface is a light redirecting film for receiving light emitted from the light output surface. The film has optical grooves extending across the film in a curved pattern facing a corner of the film in close proximity to the corner of the panel to redistribute the light emitted from the light output surface.

  • Patent number: 7887227
Abstract: The transreflectors may comprise a transparent substrate having reflective surfaces and other light transmissive surfaces for respectively reflecting and transmitting a greater portion of the light striking opposite sides of the substrate. Alternatively, the transreflectors may comprise two or more transparent substrates of different indices of refraction bonded together, with a pattern of optical deformities in the mating side of one of the substrates and an inverse pattern of optical deformities in the mating side of an other substrate in mating engagement with each other. The transreflectors are used in a transreflector system or display to transmit more of the light emitted by a backlight or other light source incident on one side of the transreflectors and reflect more of the light incident on the opposite side of the transreflectors. The transreflectors and backlight may be tuned to each other to enable the transreflectors to better transmit more of the light emitted by the backlight.
