Publication number: 20170251254Abstract: Methods, devices, systems and computer program products enable generation, distribution and management of live broadcast content in such a way so as to allow identification of a pirate device or subscriber quickly and efficiently. Content is divided into content blocks, where each content block is divided into content units. Each of the content units is selectable from n variations of the content unit and a majority of ail possible combinations of content unit variations are permissible to be selected for production of the uniquely identifiable content. The content blocks, including the n variations of the content units, a media block key, and at least one device key is delivered to an authorized device. A particular pattern of content units is generated that identifies which of the n content unit variations must be used by the authorized device for constructing each content block.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 27, 2014Publication date: August 31, 2017Inventors: Jeffrey Bruce Lotspiech, Joseph M. Patent number: 8571209Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to obtaining forensic information for an anonymous attack of digital content without variations in a broadcast encryption system. In one embodiment a media device, being configured to record digital content on recordable media, receives digital content, a unified media key block, and a recording key table. The device calculates a set of recording keys from the recording key table using a media key variant from the unified media key block. The device then generates a title key and encrypts by the digital content in the generated title key. The device then encrypts the generated title key in each one of the calculated recording keys, adds a header including the encrypted titles keys to the encrypted digital content, and stores the encrypted digital content with the header on recordable media.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2009Date of Patent: October 29, 2013Assignee: International Business MachinesInventors: Thomas Alexander Bellwood, Robert Glenn Deen, Hongxia Jin, Jeffrey Bruce Lotspiech, Sigfredo Ismael Nin, Matthew Francis Rutkowski

Tracing traitor coalitions and preventing piracy of digital content in a broadcast encryption system
Patent number: 8176568Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product to find coalitions of receivers who collude to produce pirated protected content, then evaluates the confidence that particular members of each identified coalition are traitors versus innocent receivers incriminated by chance. Typically, each file in a group of original files is modified to include variations of critical file segments. The group of files is then broadcast with individualized codes that enable particular authorized receivers to properly process the modified files. The modifications in a pirated version of a file can identify which traitorous receivers contributed to its piracy. Candidate coalitions of differing size are first evaluated to determine if they cover observed file variations with greater than a predetermined likelihood that an innocent coalition is falsely incriminated by chance. Individual members of satisfactory coalitions are then evaluated. Traitors may be cryptographically revoked.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2005Date of Patent: May 8, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Hongxia Jin, Jeffrey Bruce Lotspiech -
Patent number: 8122501Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention includes a method for traitor tracing that includes performing an inner code traitor tracing on a recovered pirated digital file, the recovered digital file incorporating an inner code for assigning segments of the digital file and an outer code for assigning inner codes to individual digital files. The method also includes extracting partial information regarding the outer code from the inner code tracing. An outer code tracing procedure may then be performed using the partial information.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2008Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Hongxia Jin, Jeffrey Bruce Lotspiech, Avinash Laxmisha Varna

Patent number: 8121952Abstract: Enhanced multimedia content on physical media interacts with the user through a media player and the Internet. Enhanced multimedia utilizes IDs for pieces of content on the media and a media key block. On the enhanced media is a file with a list of URLs. As the enhanced media plays a title requiring an external permission for decryption, the media player accesses the URL for that title and obtains the permission. The permission may be purchased or provided for free. Secure encryption and transmission of permission is accomplished by broadcast encryption using a media key block. Each media has a unique set of keys that allow the media player to process the media key block; however, each media follows a unique path through the media key block. All legitimate media players obtain the media key; circumvention devices cannot decipher the media key block.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2004Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Bradley Collar, Jeffrey Bruce Lotspiech, Florian Pestoni, Michael Ripley, Spencer Stephens

Patent number: 8108928Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention includes a method for traitor tracing that selects a probability distribution for the assignment of file-segment variations in a digital file. This probability distribution is selected to improve traceability for a particular size of a coalition of attackers. At least one symbol for each file-segment variation is then distributed based on the selected probability distribution.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2008Date of Patent: January 31, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Hongxia Jin, Jeffrey Bruce Lotspiech, Nimrod Megiddo, Michael Joseph Nelson

Patent number: 8090105Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for broadcast encryption key management. The invention eliminates the need for pre-specification of a maximum number of keys that can be employed in a given broadcast encryption system by enabling an initial key to be extended by a link key. New receiver devices are modified to validate the extended keys, while older devices ignore them and process initial keys as usual. Compromised link keys can be revoked, though revocation preferably uses a unique.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 2004Date of Patent: January 3, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Jeffrey Bruce Lotspiech
