Patent number: 9478233Abstract: A conferencing system and method involves conducting a conference between endpoints. The conference can be a videoconference in which audio data and video data are exchanged or can be an audio-only conference. Audio of the conference is obtained from one of the endpoints, and speech is detected in the obtained audio. The detected speech is analyzed to determine that the detected speech constitutes a speech fragment, and an indicia indicative of the determined speech fragment is generated. For a videoconference, the indicia can be a visual cue to be added to video for the given endpoint when displayed at other endpoints. For an audio-only conference, the indicia can be an audio cue to be added to the audio of the conference at the other end points.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2014Date of Patent: October 25, 2016Assignee: Polycom, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey C. Rodman

Patent number: 7903828Abstract: A method, microphone module and a system for full-duplex audio system implementing full duplex audio, audio echo cancellation and audio codec. The audio signals from the microphones and to the loudspeakers are encoded to reduce the transmission bandwidth requirement during wired or wireless transmission and decoded when needed for further processing. Each microphone has transceivers to receive signals fed to loudspeakers within the microphone module. An audio echo canceller is installed within each microphone module to generate echo free audio signal for further signal processing. Problems due to the combination of lossy codec and echo cancellation are avoided.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2005Date of Patent: March 8, 2011Assignee: Polycom, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey C. Rodman

Publication number: 20100226487Abstract: A networked conferencing device includes at least one speaker, a display and a plurality of environmental sensors such as cameras, microphones, light level sensors, thermal sensors and motion sensors. The conferencing device receives environmental information from the sensors and processes this information to identify qualified events. The identified qualified events are then used to determine a next powered state for the conferencing device. If the next powered state is different than a current powered state, then the conferencing system transitions to the next powered state.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 5, 2010Publication date: September 9, 2010Applicant: Polycom, Inc.Inventors: Rob Harder, Ara Bedrossian, Geraldine Maclear, Vladimir Mikulaj, Yu Xin, Ted Becker, Eric David Elias, Jeffrey C. Publication number: 20080168355Abstract: A presentation device includes an embedded web server for transmitting images representative of presentation information to network-connected terminals concurrently with the display of such presentation information at the presentation site. The images may be viewed at the terminals by pointing a conventional web browser to a DNS name or IP address associated with the presentation device. Certain of the terminals may be given presenter privileges, wherein the users of the presenter terminals may control aspects of the presentation such as slide sequencing by engaging the appropriate controls displayed within the browser window. In this manner, presentations may be viewed and controlled remotely using a conventional browser interface.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 22, 2008Publication date: July 10, 2008Applicant: POLYCOM, INC.Inventors: WAYNE DUNLAP, JEFFREY C. RODMAN, KRISTIN DUNN, RICK VANDERKAM, SAMANTHA KHA, DAHRENN BA, ODEN J McMILLAN

Patent number: 7170545Abstract: A method and apparatus to insert variable audio delay during video conferencing to achieve conflicting goals of lip-sync and interactive conversation. The amount of audio delay is variable according to the condition of the videoconferencing: long audio delay is inserted to achieve lip-sync between audio and video playback during monologue speech, but minimum or no audio delay is inserted during interactive discussion or argument. Variable audio playback speeds may be used instead of inserting quantum delay to achieve the same result. Various methods and apparatuses to detect the non-interactive mode or interactive modes are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2004Date of Patent: January 30, 2007Assignee: Polycom, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey C. Patent number: 5940049Abstract: The projector of the present invention provides a means for interactively displaying and annotating a document image at two separate locations. The projector consists of an image plate having an array of picture elements for displaying the image; a projection mechanism for projecting the image displayed by the image plate onto a projection screen; and a digitizer having a coordinate input array which corresponds to the array of picture elements of the image plate, wherein the image displayed by the image plate changes in response to coordinate inputs to the digitizer. A method for interactively annotating an image communicated between a remote and local image includes the procedure of simultaneously transmitting to the remote projector, annotations made to an image in the local projector.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1996Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignee: Polycom, Inc.Inventors: Brian L. Hinman, Jeffrey C. Rodman, Philip G. Baker

Patent number: 5883471Abstract: A circuit and method for energizing a discharge device, such as a flashlamp. A discharge device is electrically coupled to a pair of capacitors which are both charged to a desired potential level. One of the capacitors discharges through the discharge device to initially energize the discharge device until its potential level falls below the potential level of the other capacitor whereupon the other capacitor commences to discharge through the discharge device to sustain the energization of the discharge device.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1997Date of Patent: March 16, 1999Assignee: Polycom, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey C. Patent number: 5757547Abstract: A polarization converter for polarizing a light beam by converting all light waves to the same orientation comprises 1) a first beam dividing matrix of refractory material for dividing a single, large light beam into smaller sub-beam 2) a second beam focusing matrix for polarizing select portions of the sub-beams, and 3) a series of narrow and shallow polarizing cells. The second beam focusing matrix further comprises a plurality of concave lenses for redirecting each sub-beam and quarter wave retarders disposed in alignment with, and adjacent to, the reflective side of an equal plurality of mirror segments. The polarizing cells include either a first beamsplitter or a second beamsplitter, where the first beamsplitters and second beamsplitters are disposed in opposing diagonal fashion and in an alternating manner.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1995Date of Patent: May 26, 1998Assignee: Polycom, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey C. Patent number: 4068262Abstract: Method and apparatus for creating a dynamic image on a television receiver display screen reflecting mood and character of music. Methods of pattern generation and color modulation are described. The pattern as seen by a viewer is a derived X-Y coordinate plot. The invention contemplates a format translator which is defined as a memory that samples an audio waveform periodically, determines the screen position corresponding to each sample, and stores video pulses in memory locations corresponding to those screen positions. The memory is then read in a line-by-line format for television display. The memory is thus written into in an X-Y format and read out in a raster scan format. Symmetry and variable image change rate can be employed in order to produce a pattern with pleasing effects. Image color is varied by shifting the phase of the chrominance sub-carrier as a function of the music envelope.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1976Date of Patent: January 10, 1978Inventors: Michael E.
