Patent number: 9147385Abstract: Vocal musical performances may be captured and continuously pitch-corrected at a mobile device for mixing and rendering with backing tracks in ways that create compelling user experiences. In some cases, the vocal performances of individual users are captured in the context of a karaoke-style presentation of lyrics in correspondence with audible renderings of a backing track. Such performances can be pitch-corrected in real-time at the mobile device in accord with pitch correction settings. In some cases, such pitch correction settings code a particular key or scale for the vocal performance or for portions thereof. In some cases, pitch correction settings include a score-coded melody sequence of note targets supplied with, or for association with, the lyrics and/or backing track. In some cases, pitch correction settings are dynamically variable based on gestures captured at a user interface.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2010Date of Patent: September 29, 2015Assignee: Smule, Inc.Inventors: Spencer Salazar, Rebecca A. Patent number: 9082380Abstract: Notwithstanding practical limitations imposed by mobile device platforms and applications, truly captivating musical instruments may be synthesized in ways that allow musically expressive performances to be captured and rendered in real-time. In some cases, synthetic musical instruments can provide a game, grading or instructional mode in which one or more qualities of a user's performance are assessed relative to a musical score. By constantly adapting to such modes to actual performance characteristics and, in some cases, to the level of a given user musician's skill, user interactions with synthetic musical instruments can be made more engaging and may capture user interest and economic opportunities (e.g., for in-app purchase and/or social networking) over generally longer periods of time.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2012Date of Patent: July 14, 2015Assignee: Smule, Inc.Inventors: Robert Hamilton, Amanda S. Chaudhary, Ari Lazier, Jeffrey C. Smith

Patent number: 8682653Abstract: Techniques have been developed to facilitate the capture performances on handheld or other portable computing devices and, in some cases, the pitch-correction and mixing of such vocal performances with backing tracks for audible rendering on such devices. Captivating visual animations and/or facilities for listener comment and ranking are provided in association with an audible rendering of a performance, e.g., a vocal performance captured and pitch-corrected at another similarly configured mobile device and mixed with backing instrumentals and/or vocals. Geocoding of captured vocal performances and/or listener feedback may facilitate animations or display artifacts in ways that are suggestive of a performance or endorsement emanating from a particular geographic locale on a user manipulable globe. In this way, implementations of the described functionality can transform otherwise mundane mobile devices into social instruments that foster a unique sense of global connectivity and community.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2010Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignee: Smule, Inc.Inventors: Spencer Salazar, Rebecca A. Patent number: 8661509Abstract: Secure web-based messaging according to a “push” paradigm is augmented by specific, intended recipient authentication. In particular, a document can be sent to a specified, intended recipient through the Web using e-mail recipient notification, and the recipient is authenticated prior to delivering the document to the recipient. Such authentication prevents a cracker from snooping a delivery notification e-mail message and retrieving the document prior to retrieval by the true intended recipient. In addition, such authentication of the recipient is driven by the sender such that prior participation by the recipient in the messaging system according to the present invention is required.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 2012Date of Patent: February 25, 2014Assignee: Axway Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey C.
