Patent number: 7844297Abstract: A method is provided to enable the person to switch use of computing devices when working with records and/or documents. A method such as described may be implemented for an individual operating two (or more) computing devices that share and synchronize sets of records. One or more operations may be performed to update and maintain correspondence between the two sets of records. A switchover event may be detected, where the event corresponds to the individual using a second computing device while already using a first computing device. Once the switchover event is detected, state of use information may be received on the second computing device. This information indicates the state of use of one or more records on the first computing device. This information may be used to affect the state of use of corresponding records on the second computing device. In particular, the corresponding records on the second computing device may be placed in a state of use, or in a selected state for subsequent use.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2009Date of Patent: November 30, 2010Assignee: Palm, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey Charles Hawkins

Patent number: 7738912Abstract: In a communication device, user activation of a speed-dial button causes a context-sensitive menu to be displayed. The menu lists available options, or communication modes, for contacting the party associated with the speed-dial button. The user can select an item from the menu in order to initiate communication with the selected party using the communication mode associated with the menu item. In various aspects, the invention provides additional functionality for redialing previously called contact numbers, assigning speed-dial buttons to other commands and functions, and displaying presence information for contacts.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2007Date of Patent: June 15, 2010Assignee: Palm, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey Charles Hawkins, Priscilla S. Publication number: 20090271407Abstract: Disclosed is an integrated handheld computer and telephony system. Integration of the handheld computer and telephony system is at the physical and operational level. For example, the integrated handheld computer and telephony system physically integrates a handheld computer with a mobile (e.g., cellular) telephone. In addition, the handheld computer is distinct from telephony system in that they are logically separable. However, they are also operationally integrated, for example, the telephony system executes a telephone application on the processor of the handheld computer. Likewise, the handheld computer can execute applications, for example, a phone book, that can be used to launch the telephony application.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2009Publication date: October 29, 2009Applicant: PALM, INC.Inventors: Jeffrey Charles Hawkins, Robert Yuji Haitani

SHARING DATA DURING A VOICE CALL USING A MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE, AND ASSOCIATED USER INTERFACE
Publication number: 20080146256Abstract: Mobile communication devices can share data during a voice call, which data ay include documents, media streams, and/or any other information that can be stored on or accessible to the devices. These shared data may be associated with an item currently being accessed on or viewed by one of the mobile communication devices. To share the data from one device to another during a voice call, a data connection is established without interrupting the voice call. A user interface on the mobile communication device may facilitate the selection of the data to share while the voice call is in progress.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2006Publication date: June 19, 2008Inventors: Jeffrey Charles Hawkins, Ryan Case, Robert Y. Publication number: 20080140593Abstract: An HTM node learns a plurality of groups of sensed input patterns over time based on the frequency of temporal adjacency of the input patterns. An HTM node receives a new sensed input, the HTM node assigns probabilities as to the likelihood that the new sensed input matches each of the plurality of learned groups. The HTM node then combines this probability distribution (may be normalized) with previous state information to assign probabilities as to the likelihood that the new sensed input is part of each of the learned groups of the HTM node. Then, as described above, the distribution over the set of groups learned by the HTM node is passed to a higher level node. This process is repeated at higher level nodes to infer a cause of the newly sensed input.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 27, 2007Publication date: June 12, 2008Applicant: NUMENTA, INC.Inventors: Dileep George, Jeffrey Charles Hawkins, Robert Gilchrist Jaros

Patent number: 7376846Abstract: A charging and communication cable system for a handheld computer system is disclosed. The charging and communication cable system includes a first interface for connecting to the handheld computer system, a second interface for connecting to another computer system, and a third interface for coupling to a charger system. In one embodiment, the third interface used to coupled to a charger system is the same as the interface on the handheld computer system such that the charger may be coupled to the charging and communication cable system or directly to the handheld computer system.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2005Date of Patent: May 20, 2008Assignee: Palm, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey Charles Hawkins, Peter Skillman, Karl A. Publication number: 20080024465Abstract: A computing navigation mechanism includes a scroll wheel integrated below a keyboard layout for navigation of applications displayed on a computer screen. In one embodiment, the scroll wheel is configured to direct movement in response to a context of interaction with an application visible as active on the computer screen. The scroll wheel includes intra-element scrolling for moving content within a window of the application and for moving between items within a menu of the application and inter-element scrolling for moving between enabled links in the application. Intra-element scrolling may include pane scrolling to move content in the first direction or the second direction within the window pane of an application. It also may include selection scrolling to incrementally select between items in a menu list in a menu. In addition, inter-element scrolling comprises item scrolling, which incrementally moves between links within applications such as a web browser.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 30, 2006Publication date: January 31, 2008Inventors: Jeffrey Charles Hawkins, Robert Yuji Haitani, Paul Cousineau

Patent number: 7007239Abstract: Sophisticated computer-enhanced mobile telephones require intuitive user interfaces in order to allow a user to take advantage of all the available features. The present invention discloses an intuitive telephone system user interface that provides both simple familiar and new powerful user interfaces to the user. In one embodiment, the user is presented with four permanently available user interface views and a fifth user interface view that is available when there is an active telephone call. The first permanently available view is a dial pad view that is similar to a common touch tone dial pad. A second permanently available view is a speed dial view that allows users to easily create their own customized speed dial buttons that are easy to navigate between and can be edited at any time. The third view is the call history view that displays a list of previous incoming, outgoing, or missed calls and may be filtered as desired by the user.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2001Date of Patent: February 28, 2006Assignee: Palm, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey Charles Hawkins, Robert Yuj Haitani

Patent number: 6839464Abstract: A pen-based computer text input system capable of interpreting a special pre-defined set of single stroke glyphs. Each input stroke is identified with one of three categories: (1) pre-character modifier strokes, (2) character or symbol strokes, or (3) post-character modifier strokes. Pre-character modifier strokes precede character strokes and inform the present recognition system that a subsequently entered character stroke is to be modified by the pre-character modifier stroke in a pre-defined manner. Character strokes cause a character or symbol to be displayed on the display device the moment it is input on the writing tablet, interpreted in accordance with any pre-character modifier stroke. A post-character modifier stroke causes the recognition system to modify, in a pre-defined manner, a character or symbol which was previously entered and displayed. An important advantage of the present invention is its ability to provide immediate recognition of multiple stroke characters without using boxed input.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2002Date of Patent: January 4, 2005Assignee: PalmSource, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey Charles Hawkins, Joseph Kahn Sipher, Ron Marianetti, II
