Patent number: 11021236Abstract: A method of supplying hydraulic power via a zonal hydraulic system to an aircraft having a plurality of operating phases includes determining a current operating phase of the aircraft and setting a power limit (e.g., a pressure set point and/or flow limitation) for at least one hydraulic power unit based on the current operating phase. The hydraulic system includes a plurality of hydraulic zones. Each of the hydraulic zones includes a local controller, a hydraulic power unit controlled by the local controller, and at least one actuator powered by the hydraulic power unit. Energy savings may be realized by altering the pressure set point for and/or limiting the flow to hydraulic systems in inactive and/or less active zones. The zonal hydraulic system may be reconfigured for safety based on sensed failures and/or during emergency or alternate power conditions with limited available power. Duty cycles for multiple electric motor driven pumps of the system may be balanced.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2018Date of Patent: June 1, 2021Assignee: Eaton Intelligent Power LimitedInventors: Joshua Aaron Smith, Jeffrey David Skinner, Jr., Stefan Frischemeier

Patent number: 10378357Abstract: A hydraulic radial piston device is provided with a mechanism for reducing pressure pulsations and providing a smooth pressure transition throughout different displacement operations. In certain examples, the hydraulic radial piston device is configured to maintain an amount of precompression and an amount of decompression of hydraulic fluid trapped in a cylinder chamber to be consistent, respectively, throughout different displacement operations.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2016Date of Patent: August 13, 2019Assignee: Eaton Intelligent Power LimitedInventors: Jeffrey David Skinner, Kendrick Michael Gibson, Lawrence David Blackman

Publication number: 20160319799Abstract: A radial piston device (100) includes: a housing (102), a pintle (110), a rotor (130), a plurality of pistons (150) and a drive shaft (190). The radial piston device also includes a mechanism for minimizing deflection or curvature of the pintle shaft (112), which may be caused by a resulting pressure applied to the pintle shaft. In one example, the mechanism may be implemented by at least partially supporting the rotor by the housing with a bearing while the rotor is also supported by the pintle shaft with another bearing.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2014Publication date: November 3, 2016Applicant: EATON CORPORATIONInventors: Jeffrey David SKINNER, JR., Kendrick Michael GIBSON, Mark Alan LONG, William Landrum FAIRCHILDS

Publication number: 20160265520Abstract: A fluid system is provided including a fluid pump having an output and an electric motor coupled to the fluid pump. The electric motor is adapted to operate the fluid pump in response to an electrical signal. A controller adapted to communicate the electrical signal to the electric motor, the controller including an initial lookup table having initial performance data related to the fluid pump and the electric motor. The initial performance data from the initial lookup table and sensed performance data applied to a modifiable lookup table are used by the controller to set aspects of the electrical signal communicated to the electric motor to achieve a desired system pressure generated by the fluid pump.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 29, 2014Publication date: September 15, 2016Inventors: Jeffrey David SKINNER, JR., Joshua Aaron SMITH

Patent number: 8876495Abstract: Example fluid circuits (e.g., within aircrafts) include first and second pump assemblies. The first pump assembly has an electric motor and a first fluid pump. The first fluid pump is coupled to the electric motor and has a case drain port that is in fluid communication with a case drain region of the first fluid pump. The second pump assembly is powered by hydraulic pressure from the first fluid outlet of the first fluid pump and functions to augment flow through the case drain region of the first fluid pump.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2011Date of Patent: November 4, 2014Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventors: Phillip Wayne Galloway, Jeffrey David Skinner, Kelly Dale Valtr
