    Abstract: A relatively low viscosity transmission fluid composition, transmissions containing the fluids, and methods of operating motor vehicles with the fluids are described. The transmission fluid composition includes a lubricant basestock, at least one active sulfur-containing component, and at least one phosphorus-containing compound. An active sulfur atom content of the composition is greater than about 0.02 wt. %, and a ratio of active sulfur atoms to phosphorus atoms in the composition is above about 5. The composition has a viscosity at 100° C. ranging from about 4 to less than about 7 centistokes.

    Abstract: A method for improving the solubility of a sulfurized extreme pressure agent in a lubricant composition and improved lubricant compositions and uses therefor. The method includes pre-blending organic acid and amine components of a lubricant additive package for the lubricant composition to provide a premixture of organic acid and amine components. The premixture is combined with a sulfurized extreme pressure agent having a viscosity of less than about 5.5 centistokes at 100° C. to provide a lubricant additive package. By use of the foregoing process, a turbidity characteristic of the lubricant composition containing the additive package is lower than a turbidity characteristic of a lubricant composition that is made by combining the organic acid and amine components with the sulfurized extreme pressure agent in the absence of the premixture.

    Abstract: The present disclosure provides a method for lubricating a gear or transmission comprising contacting said gear or transmission with a lubricant composition wherein said lubricant composition has an ISOT score of about 3.0 or lower for varnish on the glass beaker or glass rod and a L-60-1 carbon/varnish (C/V) rating of at least about 7.5 and a L-60-1 sludge rating of at least about 9.4 and wherein said lubricant composition is substantially free of boron and has a total phosphorus content of less than about 500 ppm The present disclosure also provides a method for providing a boron-free lubricant composition capable of achieving a satisfying score on the ISOT test and the L-60-1 test comprising combining with a base oil, a lubricant additive package comprising a dispersant. and wherein the lubricant composition is substantially free of boron and has a total phosphorus content of less than about 500 ppm.
