  • Patent number: 5472360
Abstract: In an outboard motor having a four cycle power head, a drive shaft housing and an adapter plate therebetween, an oil sump in the drive shaft housing and a lubricating oil system to supply oil to the bearings of the power head, a baffle system including the adapter plate and a second planar baffle between the adapter plate and the drive shaft housing. Oil passages through the adapter plate and the second baffle are positioned on opposite sides of the power head from each other and are longitudinally separated from each other so that the oil will not flow from the oil sump back over the baffles and into the power head when the motor is horizontal.

  • Patent number: 4977741
Abstract: A combination exhaust manifold and exhaust elbow for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust cavity for receiving exhaust from the engine, an exhaust passage leading from the exhaust cavity, and an exhaust discharge outlet. A first water jacket is provided around the exhaust cavity and a second water jacket is provided around the exhaust discharge passage. A dam is provided between the first and second water jackets, having a passage therein for allowing fluid communication between the first and second water jackets. A warm water inlet is provided in the first water jacket around the exhaust cavity for receiving cooling water which has been warmed by the engine, and which flow is controlled by a temperature sensitive thermostat. A cold water inlet is provided adjacent the discharge exhaust passage.

  • Patent number: 4969504
Abstract: An evaporable foam pattern for casting a metal water-cooled exhaust manifold for an internal combustion engine. The assembled pattern is formed of an evaporable foam polymeric material, such as polystyrene, and includes an inner exhaust conduit composed of a generally upright body portion and a generally curved elbow portion. The body portion is provided with a plurality of inlet ports connected to the exhaust passages of a bank of cylinders, while the elbow portion defines a downwardly facing outlet. The pattern also includes an outer water jacket which is spaced from the exhaust conduit to provide a water passage therebetween. Both the exhaust conduit and the outer jacket are composed of two longitudinally split halves or sections having abutting edges, and the abutting edges are joined together by an adhesive. Spacing ribs interconnect the inner surface of the jacket and the outer surface of the exhaust conduit to space the sections apart.

  • Patent number: 4875439
Abstract: A fuel line cooler (34) is provided for a marine propulsion system (2) having a water cooled internal combustion engine (4) in a heat retentive compartment (5). The fuel line cooler (34) has an inlet (36) in communication with the source (14, 12) of cooling water for the engine (4), and has an outlet (38) for discharging water. The fuel line cooler (34) is cooled by sea water during running of the engine (4). Upon turn off of the engine (4), the cooled water in the fuel line cooler (34) is in heat transfer relation with the fuel and prevents vaporization and or spewing of the fuel.

  • Patent number: 4801283
Abstract: In a marine propulsion system including an internal combustion engine, a mixing tube assembly is disposed between an exhaust manifold and a discharge pipe for discharging mixed water and exhaust. The mixing tube assembly is adapted for connection to the exhaust manifold by means of a resilient connector member, such as a flanged rubber boot. This form of connection allows the adjacent surfaces of the mixing tube and the manifold to be non-machined, and provides suspension of the mixing tube from the manifold. The mixing tube includes an exhaust passage having a water jacket therearound for cooling exhaust passing therethrough. A water inlet is provided for introducing water into the water jacket. Water is discharged from the water jacket through a circumferential water discharge outlet, and exhaust is discharged from the exhaust passage through an exhaust outlet.
