  • Patent number: 7347285
Abstract: A drilling machine including a frame, a tower, a rotary head, and a rod handling device. The frame is supported for movement over the ground and the tower is mounted on the frame. The rotary head is movable along the tower and is engageable with the drill string for rotating the drill string. The rod handling device is movable along the tower and operable to selectively support the drill string. The rod handling device is biased to a first position along the tower.

  • Patent number: 5168937
Abstract: An apparatus includes a feed cylinder having a first end port and a second end port. A feed cylinder is located within the feed cylinder and is movable in a drive direction in response to fluid pressure applied to the first end port, and is movable in a return direction in response to fluid pressure applied to the second end port. A feed pump selectively displaces fluid between the first and the second end ports. A variable overcenter device controls fluid pressure offset, independent of the feed pump, between the first end port and the second end port. An adjustment device automatically adjusts the variable overcenter device during travel of the feed cylinder in the drive direction to a value corresponding to an amount of force required to displace the feed cylinder in the return direction.

  • Patent number: 5033266
Abstract: A drill feed control system for controlling the force exerted on a drill string having substantial weight. A feed cylinder, which has a first end and a second end, is connected to the drill string. Fluid is pumped from a reservoir to displace the feed cylinder. A first conduit is connected to the first end while a second conduit is attached to the second end. A variable displacement pump displaces fluid from the reservoir, within the first conduit, to the first end of the feed cylinder. A feed pressure control regulates the pressure of the variable displacement pump. An overcenter valve, which is connected to the second conduit, restricts the fluid exiting the second conduit. A relief valve controls the flow of fluid to a pilot conduit which extends between the first conduit and the overcenter valve. An orifice or check valve to release the pressure is connected to the pilot conduit such the the pressure in the pressure conduit will respond to a pressure increase or decrease in the first conduit.

  • Patent number: 4953639
Abstract: A closed loop hydraulic system for use in a rotary drilling apparatus includes an extendible-retractable feed cylinder and a valve for biasing the feed cylinder. A variable, reversible displacement pump is provided for pumping fluid from either of the first and second pump ports, including pumping fluid to the feed cylinder. A reservoir retains a supply of fluid for the system. A check valve is provided for supplying additional fluid to the pump in response to the feed cylinder being extended. An overcenter valve is connected to each of the first and second ports for controlling flow from the system in response to pressures received from the first and second ports when the feed cylinder is extended and retracted.
