Patent number: 6253994Abstract: One aspect of the present invention is a packaging material having a abhesive for preventing the adherence of the interior surfaces of the packaging material during application of a closure thereto. One example is a carton blank having the closure attached prior to erection of the blank on a packaging machine. Another example is a, roll of packaging material such as used to fabricate a TETRA BRIK® parallelepiped package on a vertical form, fill and seal machine. Another aspect of the invention is a method for applying a closure to such a packaging material. Yet another aspect of the present invention is an apparatus for applying closures to such packaging material. The abhesive may be a coating, printing, strip or an embossment of the material.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1998Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings and Finance SAInventor: Jens Mogard

Patent number: 6216905Abstract: A closure for a container and a method of producing the same is set forth. The closure is a single integrally-molded spout, cap, hinge assembly joining the spout and the cap, and a tamper evident structure. The closure may also have a membrane and pull-ring, also integrally molded as one piece. The cap may have at least one prop for preventing interference from the cap with the pouring of the contents of the container. Additionally, the spout may have a step for assisting in the prevention of interference from the cap during pouring, and for providing a predetermined sound every time that the cap is opened. Still further, the closure may have an orienting peg for properly orienting the closure on a container.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1999Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SAInventors: Jens Mogard, Karl-Erik Lundh, Gote Elof

Patent number: 6185906Abstract: A container having a resealable closure thereon is produced by a method including the steps of providing a closure having a spout and a flange and a stem projecting therefrom, placing the closure about an access area of the container and welding the closure to the container body thereby bonding at least one portion of a hinge to the spout. The closure stem defines an aperture and the cap has a lid and skirt projecting therefrom. The skirt is configured to prevent interference during pouring of the contents of the container. The hinge assembly connects the cap to the spout and allows for reclosable opening of the cap from the spout while maintaining the attachment of the cap with the spout. A tamper-evident structure is formed integrally with the cap including a removable portion secured to the closure by a breakable joint. The closure further includes an orienting projection for orienting the closure on the container at a predetermined location and position.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1999Date of Patent: February 13, 2001Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SAInventors: Jens Mogard, Karl-Erik Lundh, Gote-Elof Rickardsson

Patent number: 6179147Abstract: A closure for a package that is adapted for mounting to a surface of the package includes a mounting flange having substantially planar upper and lower surfaces that define a thickness and define a flange plane. A spout extends from the upper surface of the flange and has an inner wall defining a dispensing opening. A membrane has a central portion and a circumferential edge region and is formed in the spout so as to extend to the inner wall to define a spout seal. The membrane is severable from the spout at the edge region. The edge region is selectively thinned and has a pair of first thickness regions and a pair of second thickness regions interposed between the first thickness regions. The second thickness regions have a thickness that is greater than a thickness of the first thickness regions.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1999Date of Patent: January 30, 2001Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SAInventors: Jens Mogard, Bengt Bengtsson, Kenneth Nortman

Patent number: 6125610Abstract: A vacuum spud supports an associated closure for transport and mounting to an associated package. The closure has a spout integral with an outwardly extending flange. The spud includes a main body portion having a central region and an outer support surface for supporting the closure at the flange. The outer support surface is generally planar. The spud defines a vacuum region formed in the main body portion extending below the support surface. The vacuum region is in flow communication with a vacuum manifold formed generally centrally disposed in the main body portion and configured for connecting to an associated vacuum source for establishing a vacuum in the vacuum manifold and vacuum region. When the closure is disposed on the spud, the closure is held on the spud by the vacuum exerted on the closure at the flange.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1999Date of Patent: October 3, 2000Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SAInventors: Jens Mogard, Bengt Bengtsson, Kenneth Nortman

Patent number: 6007466Abstract: A container and closure package includes container material stock formed of a severable material defining an opening therein defining a removable confetti portion and a dispensing member molded to the material stock. The dispensing member is superimposed over the opening to substantially overlie the confetti portion. The confetti portion can be ejected from the material stock when the dispensing member is molded to the container stock and can be integrated into the closure package to form a portion thereof. The dispensing member can be a spout and can include a cover or cap integral therewith. The cap is formed with the confetti portion forming a portion of the top wall thereof. Alternately, the closure package includes a spout, such as a threaded spout which is formed extending from the container stock. The confetti portion is formed integral with the spout to establish a seal therefor. The seal can be gas-impermeable.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1998Date of Patent: December 28, 1999Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SAInventors: Hichem Bouraoui, Jens Mogard, Antonio Rendina

Patent number: 5943840Abstract: The present invention forms and seals the top end of a container prior to filling and bottom sealing. The top end may have a fitment attached thereon at a variety of different positions on a form, fill and seal packaging machine. The fitment may be a screw cap, a push-in, a flip-cap type or similar fitments. The container may be a flat top, tetrahedral or similar type container. The fitment may be applied on the exterior or the interior of the container.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1998Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SAInventors: Jan-Osten Nilsson, Goran Petersson, Jens Mogard
