    Abstract: This invention provides a thermoplastic polymer foam having a density of up to 800 kg/m3. The foam is made from a hydrogenated vinyl aromatic polymer that contains pendant cycloaliphatic groups. This polymer is conveniently made by hydrogenating a poly(vinyl aromatic) polymer such as polystyrene or a polystyrene-butadiene block copolymer. A suitable blowing agent is a mixture comprising (a) one or more fluorine-containing carbon compounds and (b) carbon dioxide, nitrogen, an alcohol having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a linear or cyclic hydrocarbon having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a ketone, an alkyl ether, an alkyl halide, water or a mixture thereof.

Use of the polymer enables process pressure drop to be significantly reduced and allows the formation of a foam of lower density and larger cross-section.     Abstract: An improved process for forming hydroperoxide derivatives of rubbery polymers. The hydroperoxide derivatives being particularly well suited for use as intermediates in forming graft rubbery polymers. The process involves dissolving a rubbery polymer in a monomer mixture and adding to the rubbery polymer/monomer mixture a photosensitizing agent. The rubbery polymer-monomer mixture is then oxygenated and exposed to light under conditions wherein triplet oxygen is converted to singlet oxygen. The improvement comprises adding to the rubbery polymer/monomer mixture a solvent capable of solubilizing the photosensitizing agent in the rubbery polymer/monomer mixutre. The solubilizer increases the yield of hydroperoxide derivatives of rubbery polymers formed by a factor of 3.

    Abstract: A polymer resin comprising a blend of an olefin polymer, such as polyethylene, a monovinylidene aromatic polymer, such as polystyrene, and a grafted, block copolymer compatibilizing agent. The compatibilizing agent comprises an .alpha.-olefin copolymer substrate grafted with amounts of monovinylidene aromatic polymer. Preferably, the .alpha.-olefin copolymer substrate is a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and a non-conjugated diolefin. This thermoplastic material has very desirable property combinations, combining the desirable properties from the olefinic and monovinylidene aromatic polymers. The blend can be shaped into final products by thermoforming techniques yet possesses many desirable polyolefin properties such as environmental stress crack resistance.
