  • Patent number: 9109238
Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to methods of making diester-based lubricant compositions, wherein formation of diester species proceeds via esterification of epoxide intermediates, and wherein the epoxide intermediates are generated via an enzymatically-driven mechanism. In some embodiments, the methods for making such diester-based lubricants utilize a biomass precursor and/or low value (e.g., Fischer-Tropsch (FT) olefins and/or alcohols) so as to produce high value diester-based lubricants. In some embodiments, such diester-based lubricants are derived from FT olefins and fatty acids. The fatty acids can be from a bio-based source (i.e., biomass, renewable source) or can be derived from FT alcohols via oxidation.

  • Publication number: 20120052538
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing a triglyceride product comprising the steps of: (a) subjecting a triglyceride feedstock comprising at least 25 mole %, based on the total amount of acyl groups in the triglycerides, unsaturated C18 fatty acid residues to an alcoholy- sis reaction with an alcohol having 1 to 6 carbon atoms (C1-C6) to obtain a reaction mixture, 5 wherein the conversion is at least 65%; (b) separating from the reaction mixture produced in step (a) fractions comprising (i) unsaturated C18 fatty acid alkyl esters and (ii) glycerides; and (c) using the fractions (i) and (ii) or subfractions thereof in a condensation reaction catalyzed by a lipase to produce a triglyceride product comprising at least 80 mole % unsaturated fatty acids.

  • Publication number: 20080138856
Abstract: The enantioselectivity of fungal lipolytic enzymes can be altered by substituting a suitably selected amino acid residue. The residue to be substituted is selected from its location in the 3D structure of the enzyme and an ester substrate (or a substrate analogue). A residue in the lid may be selected if it is located close to the acid part or close to the alcohol part of an ester substrate. A residue outside the lid region may be selected if it is located close to the active site or close to the substrate.
