  • Publication number: 20240139870
Abstract: A laser crafting apparatus for directing electromagnetic radiation toward a workpiece may include various features. For example, the laser crafting apparatus may include a material support tray that is removably supported within an internal volume of the laser crafting apparatus. Further, the apparatus may include pre-filter disposed in a ventilation pathway between a workspace region of the internal volume and an extractor fan. The laser crafting apparatus may include a laser carriage assembly that houses a laser module and the assembly may include a lens tray detachably coupled to the support structure of the laser carriage assembly. In various embodiments, the laser crafting apparatus includes a lid having a radiation attenuation layer and a fire suppression layer.

  • Patent number: 7349596
Abstract: A system to remove cladding light from an optical fiber that includes a core and a cladding that surrounds the core. A volume of an index-matching material contacts an exterior surface of the cladding along a contact length of the optical fiber. The index-matching material has a refractive index that substantially matches a refractive index of the cladding at a predetermined clamping temperature and has a refractive index with a negative temperature coefficient, such that the index matching material distributively removes light from the cladding along the contact length based on the temperature of the index matching material that contacts the cladding.

  • Patent number: 6600854
Abstract: A system and method for polishing an optical fiber with a polishing lap. The system comprises a substrate, an optical fiber disposed on the substrate so as to be outwardly curved, and an electrical conductor disposed over the outward curve of the optical fiber. A voltage source is connected to the electrical conductor, and the polishing lap is configured to initially abrade the electrical conductor to cause severance thereof. The position of the polishing lap when the electrical conductor is severed represents a reference point approximately indicating the surface of the optical fiber. A detector connected to the electrical conductor detects a change in voltage therein, indicating severance of the electrical conductor, and subsequently monitors the polishing depth relative to the reference point.

  • Publication number: 20020181873
Abstract: A multimode optical coupler comprising a first optical fiber having a polished face on its side, and a second optical fiber having an end which is polished at an angle. The angled polished end of the second optical fiber is disposed in mating alignment with the polished face of the first optical fiber, and light energy propagating through the second fiber can pass into the first fiber. A series of such couplers may be interconnected in a network so as to combine the energy of many light sources for a desired power level in a single optical fiber.
