Patent number: 7219645Abstract: An oil pump for an engine having a first cam shaft and a second cam shaft. The oil pump includes a housing and a first pump assembly at least partially disposed within the housing. The first pump assembly includes a rotating element that is adapted to be directly driven by the first cam shaft. A second pump assembly is at least partially disposed within the housing. The second pump assembly includes a rotating element that is adapted to be directly driven by the second cam shaft.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2006Date of Patent: May 22, 2007Assignee: Harley-Davidson Motor Company Group, Inc.Inventors: Charles J. Lamb, Jesse Dees

Patent number: 7063078Abstract: A breather assembly for a motorcycle engine includes first and second substantially identical rocker supports that are each coupled to a respective cylinder head. Rocker covers are coupled to the rocker supports and cooperate therewith to define respective rocker chambers. Each rocker support defines a first breather passage and a second breather passage. A first breather assembly is coupled to the first breather passage of the first rocker support, and second breather assembly is coupled to the second breather passage of the second rocker support. A gasket member positioned between the rocker supports and the cylinder heads obstructs the unused breather passages of each rocker support. A sealing member is also provided that seals the interface between the rocker support and the rocker cover, and that also seals the interface between the breather assembly and the associated breather passage.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2004Date of Patent: June 20, 2006Assignee: Harley-Davidson Motor Company Group, Inc.Inventors: Jesse Dees, Brian G. Thate, Samir Mesanovic, Gregory Schmidt

Patent number: 6974315Abstract: An oil pump for a vehicle engine. The oil pump includes an oil pump housing and a gerotor. The oil pump housing includes a cavity that defines an inside diameter. The gerotor is positioned within the cavity, is rotatable relative to the housing, and defines a thickness and an outside diameter. The distance between the inside diameter and the outside diameter is non-uniform across the thickness.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2003Date of Patent: December 13, 2005Assignee: Harley-Davidson Motor Company Group, Inc.Inventor: Jesse Dees

Patent number: 6457449Abstract: A motorcycle engine includes a crankcase, a cam chest, and a separating wall between the crankcase and cam chest. An opening is defined in the wall and communicates between the cam chest and crankcase. A valve assembly, which is preferably a reed valve assembly, covers the opening and permits one-way flow of air from the crankcase into the cam chest in response to pressure differentials caused by reciprocation of the engine's pistons. The air is then forced into the engine's rocker boxes through the engine's pushrod tubes and forces oil in the rocker boxes to return to the crankcase through narrow oil drainback passages.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2001Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Assignee: Harley-Davidson Motor Company Group, Inc.Inventors: Paul J. Troxler, Jesse Dees
