Abstract: In an interactive display interface, an implementation for setting up around each of the selectable items, e.g. icons, a perimeter zone or halo at a predetermined distance from the perimeter of the item or icon. Thus, when an icon with such a halo is approached by an on-screen pointer, e.g. cursor, there are means for moving an adjacent icon which is within this halo to a screen position beyond this predetermined distance, i.e halo. The moved adjacent icons are subsequently returned to their original positions after a set period of time or after the pointer or cursor has moved beyond the approached icon. One aspect of this invention is directed to an icon state wherein said adjacent icons and selectable icons overlap each other and, thus, it is difficult for the user to distinguish which icon he wishes to select.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling communication utilizing a pool of communication devices each capable of communicating at one or more multiple diverse predetermined data rates. Identifying indicia for each remote communication device attempting communication is stored in association with preferred data rate or range of data rates. Thereafter, subsequent attempts at communication by such remote communication devices are automatically coupled to a specific communication device within the pool having a compatible communications data rate.

Abstract: An apparatus and method of printing multiple related Web pages are provided. The apparatus and method may be a print plug-in module which when invoked generates a visual representation of Web pages related to a displayed Web page. The display of the pages is in a tree structure whereby the root of the tree is the displayed page. Displaying the pages in a tree structure provides an order in which the Web pages relate to each other. The printing of the Web pages is user-selectable.

Abstract: A method for a user interface includes selecting information from a current location and placing the information in a queue for later placement at a destination, and then selecting a destination and placing the information at the destination. Responsive to the placing of the information in the queue, and until the placing of the information at the destination, the information is displayed in the current location and an appearance of a user display pointer shows that the queue has an entry. The queue is capable of holding second information concurrent with the first information.

Abstract: A data processing system for efficiently attaching files to electronic mail message. In a multi-level hierarchical file storage system within the data processing system wherein one or more files may be active, only those files, which are active, are initially proffered as candidates for attachment in response to a user's indicated desire to attach a file to an electronic mail message. If the user fails to select an active file for attachment, the user is prompted to select a file from the multi-level hierarchical file storage system for attachment. After attachment, the electronic mail message and attachment are transmitted.

Abstract: A system, apparatus and method of performing e-mail message searches across multiple mailboxes are provided. The system, apparatus and method perform the e-mail message searches across multiple mailboxes by launching a search feature of a currently accessed mailbox where at least one search term for a search is entered. Then, if multiple mailboxes are to be simultaneously searched, each mailbox is identified. The mailboxes are identified by their address, the username and password that are used to access them. Each mailbox is then accessed using the provided address, username and password. After accessing the mailbox, its search feature is launched and the search criteria passed to each launched search feature in order to perform the search. The mailboxes may be further identified by a particular name.

Abstract: A system, apparatus and method that allow a user to perform a search for a thread (i.e., related messages) in a mailbox are provided. To do so, the message for which a search for related messages is to be performed is identified. Since each message has a header that includes a unique message identification number and since each message that is a reply to a previous message has a reference of the previous message in its header, a search may be performed by identifying each message in the mailbox that has a reference to the message identification number of the identified message. In many instances, the search may be performed recursively to obtain all messages that are upstream and downstream of the identified message. Upstream messages are messages that are chronologically before the identified message while downstream messages are chronologically after the identified message.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method, apparatus, and computer instructions for obtaining status information for processes executing in a grid. Responsive to a submission of a job from the data processing system to a remote node on the grid, a job identifier is received from the remote node. The job identifier is saved in a set of job identifiers. Responsive to a request for a status of jobs submitted from the data processing system, a job status request for each job identifier in the set of job identifiers for processes still executing is submitted using the set of job identifiers to form a set of job status requests. Responses to the set of job status requests are received. The responses are then presented.

Abstract: An implementation for giving the user more options for tailoring the intrusive interface messaging to the user needs by providing a system, method and program wherein the user in a computer managed network of a plurality of data processor controlled interactive display stations, has the option of selectively preventing data transmitted to a receiving display station from intruding on selected programs running on the user interface display of said receiving display station. Apparatus for loading programs into one of the receiving display stations has an associated interactive implement enabling a user at the receiving display station to designate any of the programs being loaded as not to be disturbed.

Abstract: Presenting to a user at a receiving Web station, who is viewing a received Web document or Web page, a very clear picture of which hyperlinks in each Web page are linked to a Web page/document that has already been bookmarked by the user. A system for tracking bookmarking in received Web documents that comprises the combination of apparatus associated with one of the receiving display stations for bookmarking of selected received Web documents to thereby store, as bookmarks, at the receiving display station, direct links to the sources of the Web documents, apparatus associated with this one receiving display station for comparing the stored bookmarks to hyperlinks in each received Web document to determine if the hyperlinks have been bookmarked, and an implementation which, in response to the apparatus for comparing, then visually distinguishes each bookmarked hyperlink in the received displayed Web document.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for authorizing execution of an application on the data processing system. A request is received to execute the application, wherein the request originates from a remote data processing system and wherein the request includes a digital certificate and the application. The digital certificate is verified in response to receiving the request. Responsive to verifying the digital certificate, a digital digest is calculated for the application to form a calculated digital digest. The calculated digital digest is compared with a set of digital digests from a trusted source. The application is executed if a match between the calculated digital digest and set of digital digests occurs.

Abstract: A system, apparatus and method of displaying a Web page accessed via a link are provided. The system, apparatus and method display the Web page by determining whether an opened browser session is locked. If the opened browser session is locked a new browser session is opened to display the Web page. Otherwise, the Web page is displayed in the opened browser session if it is so configured.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for obtaining a logical unit. A request is sent for the logical unit. In the depicted examples, the request is sent to a multicast IP address. Responses to the request for the logical unit are received from a number of responders. A responder is identified from the set of responders to form a selected responder. The selected responder is identified based on at least one connection metric between the data processing system and the set of responders. The logical unit is retrieved from the selected responder.

Abstract: A display interface at a sending terminal including the conventional means enabling the sender of an electronic mail document to specify users to receive the document; but, in addition, provides means enabling the sender of the electronic mail document to specify users not receive the document. Then, users specified not to receive the electronic mail document are precluded from receiving the document. Thus, the sender is enabled to specify users not to receive a copy, forward or print of the document. A display interface is also provided at a receiving terminal that includes means enabling the receiver of an electronic mail document to further specify users to be forwarded the document; and also means enabling the receiver of the electronic mail document to specify users not to be forwarded the document.

Abstract: A system, apparatus and method of notifying a user that there may be a possibility of communicating with a computer system other than an intended one are provided. When a host in use by the user is to request a DNS name service, the request is sent to two or more DNS servers. If all the servers return the same IP address, then there is a likelihood that the user may communicate with the intended computer system. If, however, two or more different IP addresses are returned, there is a high likelihood that the user may communicate with a computer system other than the intended one. When this occurs a warning is generated notifying the user of such a likelihood.

Abstract: A method, program and system for downloading and deleting applications associated with particular file types are provided. The invention comprises, when opening a browser, determining if a given file type has an associated application on the computer. If the file type does not have an associated application, the invention determines if the user has previously been asked about this file type. If the user has not previously been asked about this file type, the invention asks if the user wants to download the associated application for the file type. If user chooses to, the application is downloaded. When a user enters a request to delete a program from the computer, the invention determining if the program is the last one servicing a given file type on the computer. If the program is not the last one servicing this file type, this program is deleted. If the program is the last one servicing that file type, the invention searches the computer to determine if there are any files using that type.

Abstract: A method, program, and system for prioritizing data read operations are provided. The invention comprises prioritizing a plurality of storage drives that contain duplicate data, and, responsive to a read request, reading data from the highest priority storage drive among the plurality of storage drives. If the highest priority drive is unavailable, or if the read operation is unsuccessful, data is read from the next highest priority drive that is available. The drive can be distributed over a network, with priority determined according to proximity to a given user.

Abstract: An implementation for dynamically tracking received lengthy Web documents containing text, images, media and hyperlinks to other documents to determine the user interests in the various document portions with little or no effort on the part of novice computer users to carry out such tracking. The cumulative time that said user spends in each of a plurality of document portions during the navigation via scrolling of the received Web document is tracked, and the tracked cumulative time spent in each of said portions is visually indicating within the received Web document.

Abstract: A system, apparatus and method that relate a real-time clock of a first computer system to a real-time clock of a second computer system are provided. When the first computer system is using files created by the second computer system, it requests that the second computer provides its current local time. The first computer records the time of the request, the time the response to the request is received as well as the requested current local time. Using these different recorded times, the first computer is able to compute a time difference (if any) between its real-time clock and the real-time clock of the second computer system.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved method, apparatus, and computer instructions for providing source information from an object originating from a first document and inserted into a second document. The present invention automatically generates source information for an object that is cut or copied from a document and inserted into another document. The source information may be stored, hidden, or pasted into the second document, and also may automatically trigger the generation of a footnote for the second document. An application supplies the source information that the window manager extracts when an object is cut or copied from a document. The window manager requests the source information from the application displaying the first document. The application displaying the second document accepts the source information from the window manager when an object originating from the first document is inserted into the second document.
