  • Publication number: 20170149461
Abstract: A method and apparatus for distinguishing voice signals that are played together over the same speaker employs spectral reshaping of one or more of the audio signals. The spectral reshaping shifts modifies the timber of the voice signal while not modifying the pitch of the voice signal. Additional techniques can be used to further distinguish voice signals, such as dynamic gain offset and frequency shifting. After processing one or more signals to spectrally reshape them, they can be played over the same speaker. A user hearing the resulting acoustic signal will be more able to distinguish between the multiple voice signals being played.

  • Patent number: 9591124
Abstract: A method, system and device enable transferring an audio signal between devices of a single user. The method includes pairing, over a master-less communication link, a narrowband communication device operating in a narrowband communication system and a broadband communication device operating in a broadband communication system. A call is then established between the narrowband communication device and the narrowband communication system or between the broadband communication device and the broadband communication system. Next, an audio quality parameter is determined at least one of the narrowband communication device and the broadband communication device. An audio signal of the call is then transmitted, over the master-less communication link and in response to the audio quality parameter, from one to the other of the broadband communication device and the narrowband communication device.

  • Patent number: 9344532
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided by which a radio communication device relays emergency signals across different channels using dual-watch. A dual-watch primary receiver of the radio communication device is allocated to a user selected home channel, while a dual-watch secondary receiver continually scans a pre-stored list of secondary channels for the purpose of detecting a possible emergency signal. The radio communication device upon detecting an emergency signal in either the home channel or any of the scanned secondary channels, relays the emergency signal to all the channels present in the radio communication device's channel list, except for the originating channel.

  • Patent number: 9214975
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided by which a radio communication device with multi-watch receivers improves the comprehension of a high-priority message when the high-priority message is overlapped in time with a normal-priority message. A first receiver of the radio communication device receives a first incoming message over a first channel, and a second receiver of the radio communication device receives a second incoming message over a second channel. The radio communication device, upon receiving the first and second incoming messages, detects that a portion of the first incoming message overlaps in time with a portion of the second incoming message. The radio communication device further determines whether at least one of the first or the second incoming message is a high-priority message and repeats the determined high-priority message when at least one of the first or second incoming messages is a high-priority message.

  • Patent number: 8565702
Abstract: A channel scanning technique and apparatus provides audio hole suppression in two-way radio communications. Upon detecting the absence of a carrier signal on a priority channel during a priority scan mode of operation, a training waveform is constructed upon returning to the home-channel. The training waveform is applied to audio shaping filters within an audio lineup to suppress transients and minimize or eliminate the occurrence of audio pops at a speaker output thereby reducing the audio hole.

  • Patent number: 8160528
Abstract: A device receives a signal and, prior to demodulating the signal determines whether carrier is present in the received signal based on the correlation depth of the received signal. The device determines a plurality of values for the received signal that indicate the amount of correlation in the received signal and detects the presence of the carrier in the received signal as a function of the plurality of values. The plurality of values can include autocorrelation values and prediction coefficients, wherein the autocorrelation values are estimated based on an autocorrelation function derived for the received signal, and the prediction coefficients are generated using a prediction model that is derived as a function of the autocorrelation values. The prediction coefficients can be summed to generate a decision statistic that is compared to a detection threshold to detect the presence of the carrier.

  • Publication number: 20080146289
Abstract: A solution for automatically activating different audio transducers of a mobile communication device based upon an orientation of the device. In the solution, a series of speaker/microphone assemblies can be positioned on the device, such as positioned near an earpiece and positioned near a mouthpiece. Different speaker/microphone assemblies can also be positioned on the front of the device and on the back of the device. The solution can automatically determine an orientation for the device, based upon a detected direction of a speech emitting source and/or based upon one or more sensors, such as a tilt sensor and an accelerometer. For example, when a device is in an upside down orientation, an earpiece microphone and a mouthpiece speaker can be activated. In another example, an otherwise deactivated rear facing speaker can be activated when the device is oriented in a rear facing orientation.
