  • Patent number: 5992328
Abstract: A separation system for separating a first section from a second section is disclosed. In one embodiment, the separation system includes first and second doublers for initially interconnecting the first and second sections, an expandable explosive system contained in a cavity defined by the first and second doublers and first and second sections, and first and second staggered grooves positioned on the first and second doublers, the first and second doublers severable along break planes defined by the first and second staggered grooves to facilitate a substantially collision-free separation and ejection of the first section relative to the second section.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 16, 1997
Date of Patent: November 30, 1999
    Assignee: Lockheed Martin Corporation
Inventors: Jim W. Blain, Robert Arthur Nelson, Duane D. Grosskrueger, John J. Smith, Michael D. Krohn
  • Patent number: 5983802
Abstract: A separation system for separating a first section from a second section is disclosed. In one embodiment, the separation system includes first and second doublers for initially interconnecting the first and second sections, an expandable explosive system contained in a cavity defined by the first and second doublers and first and second sections, and a slide plane including first and second slide members, the first and second slide members slidably engagable with each other for at least initially guiding the first section away from and relative to the second section upon severance of the first and second doublers.

  • Patent number: 5010821
Abstract: A dual-purpose energy transfer/signal transmission line including a hollow tubular cord containing on the inner surface thereof a thin layer explosive, the ignition of which creates a shock wave of energy perpetuated through the cord, in which the cord contains a fiber-optic or electrical signal transmission line of substantially smaller diameter than the ID of the explosive cord. The invention also includes junction blocks allowing ingress/egress of the signal line into and out of the explosive cord.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 22, 1986
Date of Patent: April 30, 1991
Assignee: Lockheed Missiles & Space Company, Inc.

  • Patent number: 3971290
Abstract: An explosive linear cutter for cutting materials comprising an explosive rge sheathed in a metal covering, a support for said charge surrounding the covering except for a slot facing the target material to be cut. Separation of the target material is effected by propelling a fragment of metal sheath at high velocity through the slot and into the target upon detonation of said explosive charge to thereby achieve a clean highly directional cut along a desired separation line. This abstract is for the purpose of providing a non-legal brief statement to serve as a searching tool and is not intended to limit the scope of the invention as disclosed herein nor limit the scope or fair meaning of the appended claims.
