  • Publication number: 20050007756
Abstract: A reflecting apparatus for a backlight module of a plane display is disclosed. The backlight module includes a light guide distal from the reflecting apparatus, and a plurality of diffusers. The apparatus comprises a light source, a reflector, and two substantially parallel sets of partially overlapped light deflectors wherein a gap exists between either two adjacent light deflectors of the same set or one light deflector and the reflector. A portion of emitted light is directed to the light guide after being reflected from the reflector. The remaining portion of light is directed to the light guide either after it has been deflected by the light deflectors or deflected by the light deflectors prior to being reflected by the reflector. Parallel light received at the light guide is deflected to the plane display as a backlight source of the plane display after passing the diffusers.

  • Patent number: 6441875
Abstract: A device for enhancing the linear polarization intensity of light which passes through a polarizer is provided, which comprises: a prepolarizer receiving incident natural light and splitting the natural light into a plurality of polarized light beams with different polarization directions, changing the polarization direction of the light beams, thereby enhancing the light intensity of a particular polarization direction; and a polarizer having polarization direction the same as that of the prepolarizer, receiving the light emitted from the prepolarizer, and then converting the light into a linearly polarized light.

  • Patent number: 5680185
Abstract: A polymer dispersed liquid crystal display apparatus has a liquid crystal/polymer medium formed between spatially disposed electrodes formed spatially disposed substrates. The medium includes a polymer phase and a liquid crystal phase having optical axes alignable together in a predetermined direction. A light absorption additive is included in the liquid crystal phase to provide light absorption when said optical axes are aligned in said predetermined direction so that in the presence or absence of an electric field applied between said electrodes, two different conditions are achieved comprising alignment and misalignment of the optical axes of the liquid crystal phase relative to the polymer phase so that in one condition, a light absorption state is created in the medium and in the other condition, a light scattering state is created in the medium.

  • Patent number: 5440424
Abstract: A polarizer optical device for receiving and transmitting light is provided. The polarizer optical device includes a light separating section for separating the light into two polarization components which are othogonal with respect to one another. Further, the optical device is provided with a polarization rotating section for rotating the two polarization components so that a phase difference between the two polarization components othogonal to each other is 1/2.lambda.. Finally, a light combining section is provided for combining the light into a outputted light beam. The light combining section may be formed with a combination of birefringent prisms and isotropic mediums interfacing one another. In these configurations, the refractive index of each prism or medium is selected so that an angle formed with two unparallel incident lights differs from an angle formed with two output or transmitted lights.

  • Patent number: 5305126
Abstract: A polymer dispersed liquid crystal material (PDLC) device is fabricated by sealing a composite layer mixture of components comprising a polymer and liquid crystal material while both are in their liquid phase in a gap portion formed between two substrates of the device. A predetermined directional alignment is transmitted to the polymer via the liquid crystal material by means, for example, of formed directional alignment on surfaces in contact with the composite layer, such as, by deposited alignment films on a surface of at least one of the substrates. The predetermined directional alignment of the polymer is thereafter fixed by means of a polymer hardening method, such as, for example, by polymerization of a polymer precursor, so that the predetermined directional alignment of the polymer is permanently retain within the liquid crystal material, i.e., the polymer is in a solid phase and the liquid crystal material remains in its liquid phase.
