The coating composition comprises: a calcium carbonate pigment component comprising a mixture high and low surface area calcium carbonate pigment; a metal salt drying agent; and a cationic dye fixing agent; a pigment binder; optionally a plastic pigment; and optionally an optical brightener; and which provides: a solids content of at least about 25%; a ratio of high to low surface area calcium carbonate in the range of from about 0.5:1 to about 20:1; and a ratio of calcium carbonate pigment component to pigment binder in the range of from about 4:1 to about 50:1.
