Publication number: 20130105524Abstract: A liquid dispensing valve includes a liquid dispensing portion with a liquid inlet, a liquid outlet, and a liquid passage communicating between the liquid inlet and liquid outlet. A valve member is mounted for movement relative to the liquid outlet between open and closed positions. An actuation portion is coupled with the liquid dispensing portion and includes an inflatable bladder structure. The inflatable bladder structure includes an interior adapted to be coupled in fluid communication with a source of positively pressurized air. The bladder structure may be expanded by the positively pressurized air to move the valve member to at least one of the open or closed positions from the other of the open or closed positions. Methods of dispensing liquid, such as hot melt adhesive, from the valve are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 31, 2011Publication date: May 2, 2013Applicant: Nordson CorporationInventor: Joel E. Saine

Patent number: 8399053Abstract: A nozzle for dispensing a random pattern of liquid adhesive filaments. The nozzle may include first and second air shim plates, an adhesive shim plate and first and second separating shim plates. The first and second air shim plates each have respective pairs of air slots. Each air slot has a process air inlet and a process air outlet and the air slots of each pair converge toward one another such that the process air inlets are farther apart than the process air outlets in each pair. The adhesive shim plate includes a plurality of liquid slots each with a liquid outlet. Four process air outlets are associated with each of the liquid outlets. The process air slots are adapted to receive pressurized process air and the liquid slots are adapted to receive pressurized liquid adhesive. The pressurized process air discharges from each group of the four process air outlets and forms a zone of turbulence for moving the filament of liquid adhesive discharging from the associated liquid outlet in a random pattern.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2010Date of Patent: March 19, 2013Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventors: Benjamin J. Bondeson, Thomas Burmester, Hubert Kufner, Joel E. Saine

Publication number: 20120258246Abstract: A contact nozzle for coating an elastic strand with an adhesive. Air is discharged at the adhesive in contact with the strand, causing the adhesive to spread around the periphery of the strand. The air assists with release of the adhesive from the nozzle and also cleans the nozzle to discourage adhesive build-up on the nozzle.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 10, 2012Publication date: October 11, 2012Applicant: NORDSON CORPORATIONInventors: Joel E. Saine, Charles P. Ganzer

Patent number: 7175108Abstract: An apparatus (10) for dispensing a filament of liquid includes a nozzle (12) having a liquid discharge passage (46) and a plurality of air discharge passages (70, 72, 74, 76). The liquid discharge passage (46) extends centrally through a frustoconical protrusion (89) which is located in a recess (88). The air discharge passages (70, 72, 74, 76) are arranged in a pattern around the liquid discharge passage (46) at the base of the protrusion (89) within the recess (88). The air discharge passages (70, 72, 74, 76) have axes (70a, 72a, 74a, 76a) which are inclined such that jets of air from the air discharge passages (70, 72, 74, 76) are tangential to the filament (13) dispensed from the liquid discharge passage (46). The jets of air cause the filament (13) to move in a swirl pattern as it is deposited on a substrate (18).Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2003Date of Patent: February 13, 2007Assignee: Nordson CorporationInventor: Joel E.
