Patent number: 8528120Abstract: Fire resistant garments are disclosed made from a fabric containing a fiber blend. The fiber blend contains meta-aramid fibers, fire resistant cellulose fibers, non-aromatic polyamide fibers, and optionally para-aramid fibers. The non-aromatic polyamide fibers are present in an amount sufficient to dramatically improve the abrasion resistance of the fabric without adversely interfering with the flame resistant properties. In addition to abrasion resistance, the particular blend of fibers has also been found to dramatically improve or increase various other properties. In one embodiment, the fabric is made with a herringbone weave which has been found to unexpectedly improve tear properties and porosity.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 2012Date of Patent: September 10, 2013Assignee: International Textile Group, Inc.Inventors: Joey K. Underwood, Jacques Cantin

Publication number: 20130205481Abstract: Protective garments are disclosed having an inner lining with high lubricity and high strength characteristics. The inner lining, in one embodiment, contains spun yarns combined with para-aramid multifilament yarns. The spun yarns may also contain flame resistant fibers, such as meta-aramid fibers, FR cellulose fibers, or mixtures thereof. The para-aramid filament yarns provide excellent strength characteristics to the fabric. In addition, in some embodiments, the multifilament yarns may enhance the fire resistant properties of the fabric. In one embodiment, the para-aramid filament yarns may have less than five twists per inch, such as from about 1 twist per inch to about four twists per inch.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 14, 2012Publication date: August 15, 2013Applicant: INTERNATIONAL TEXTILE GROUP, INC.Inventors: Joey K. Underwood, Jacques A. Cantin, Guy Connors Lucas

Publication number: 20110165807Abstract: A non-coated fabric for outdoor applications is provided that is made up of a woven fabric and a chemical composition applied to the woven fabric. The woven fabric is made from multifilament yarns that are solution dyed and have a UV rating of at least 500 hours. The chemical composition is applied to the woven fabric and incorporated into the fabric such that the fabric has a hydrostatic pressure of at least 45 cm.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2010Publication date: July 7, 2011Inventors: Joey K. Patent number: 7581260Abstract: A protective garment of the type typically worn by fire fighters with improved water resistance is disclosed. In particular, the present invention is directed to an outer shell material for protective garments that is made from a fire resistant material coated with a durable water resistant coating. The durable water resistant coating is applied to the outer shell in a manner so that the coating will not degrade when exposed to normal wear and tear and even after the garment has been laundered repeatedly. Protective garments constructed in the past typically lost most of their water repellency after being laundered as little as five cycles. It has been discovered that water resistant coatings applied according to the process of the present invention, on the other hand, can survive at least 30 laundry cycles, and in many applications at least 50 laundry cycles without significantly degrading.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2005Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: International Textile Group, Inc.Inventors: Joey K. Underwood, T. Doyle Kelley

Patent number: 7049252Abstract: An abrasion resistant and water resistant fabric is disclosed. The fabric is particularly well suited for use in constructing luggage. The fabric, however, is also well suited for many other applications, such as use in constructing sportswear, outdoor apparel, military apparel, and the like. The fabric is treated with a chemical composition. It has been discovered that the chemical composition greatly enhances the abrasion resistance of the fabric. In one embodiment, the fabric is made from nylon multifilament yarns.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2004Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Assignee: Safety Components Fabric Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Joey K. Underwood, T. Doyle Kelley

Patent number: 6247179Abstract: A protective garment of the type typically worn by firefighters includes an improved liner assembly. The liner assembly comprises a lining fabric made from multifilament yarns in one weave direction and spun yarns in the other weave direction. The yarns are woven together to produce a first side of higher lubricity and a second side of lesser lubricity. The higher lubricity side forms an outer surface of the liner assembly to reduce friction otherwise caused by rubbing against adjacent surfaces, such as the firefighter's clothing.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1998Date of Patent: June 19, 2001Assignee: Safety Components Fabric Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Joey K. Underwood, J. Russell Hayes, T. Doyle Kelley

Patent number: 5858888Abstract: A protective garment of the type typically worn by firefighters includes an improved liner assembly. The liner assembly comprises a lining fabric made from multifilament yarns in one weave direction and spun yarns in the other weave direction. The yarns are woven together using a satin weave to produce a first side of higher lubricity and a second side of lesser lubricity. The higher lubricity side forms an outer surface of the liner assembly to reduce friction otherwise caused by rubbing against adjacent surfaces, such as the firefighter's clothing.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1996Date of Patent: January 12, 1999Assignee: Safety Components Fabric Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Joey K.
