Abstract: There is described a method of controlling a long-stroke, hydraulic operating cylinder (1), in particular a screw-down cylinder for an edging stand, where the piston (4), to which a load can be applied at both ends, and which can be locked hydraulically along its stroke (s) in various working positions, is abruptly loaded with an external force after it has been locked. To create advantageous method conditions, it is proposed that the piston (4) be locked under a hydraulic pressure chosen in dependence on the respective working position, which hydraulic pressure decreases along the stroke (s) against the direction of action of the external force.

Abstract: A cooling device for cooling a hot, moving metal strip by means of laminar coolant jets consists of at least one water box (3) located across the direction of strip travel, into which at least one coolant supply line (4) leads and from which a plurality of coolant discharge lines (5) arranged at a distance from one another depart. In order to ensure that uniform flow conditions occur in the coolant jets during operation, particularly also during the starting and stopping phases of the cooling device, and to reliably prevent uncontrolled continued coolant flow, a shut-off device (6) is allocated to each coolant discharge line (5).

Abstract: There is disclosed a rolling arrangement including a rolling stand and a preceding descaling means. In order to obtain a perfect surface quality while maintaining a high energy content of the rolling stock the descaling means is arranged immediately in front of the rolls of the rolling stand and is formed by a rotor descaling means. The liquid jets emerging from the rotor descaling means and impinging on the rolling stock are directed opposite to the rolling direction. The liquid impinging on the point of impact of the liquid jet on the surface of the rolling stock, after impingement has a flow resultant which--projected on the rolling direction--has a component opposite to the rolling direction.
