  • Patent number: 4929371
Abstract: A high performance lubricating grease effectively lubricates and protects caster rollers and bearings in steel mills and other metal processing mills. The high performance grease has excellent extreme pressure and antiwear qualities and is economical, nontoxic and safe. In the preferred form, the high performance grease comprises a base oil, a polyurea thickener, extreme pressure wear-resistant additives comprising tricalcium phosphate and calcium carbonate, and a water-resistant high performance polymer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 31, 1989
Date of Patent: May 29, 1990
    Assignee: Amoco Corporation
    Inventor: John A. Waynick
  • Patent number: 4904399
Abstract: A process is provided for preventing grease fires, which is particularly useful in steel mills and process mills. In the process, when a flame is ignited and approaches a special grease, the special grease emits carbon dioxide to extinguish the flame and prevents combustion of the grease.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 31, 1989
Date of Patent: February 27, 1990
    Assignee: Amoco Corporation
    Inventor: John A. Waynick
  • Patent number: 4902435
Abstract: A high performance lubricating grease effectively lubricates and greases front-wheel drive joints. The front-wheel drive grease has excellent extreme pressure properties and antiwear qualities and is economical, non-toxic and safe. In one preferred form, the front-wheel drive grease comprises a base oil, a thickener comprising polyurea and calcium complex soap, and an additive package comprising tricalcium phosphate and calcium carbonate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 22, 1988
Date of Patent: February 20, 1990
    Assignee: Amoco Corporation
    Inventor: John A. Waynick
  • Patent number: 4879054
Abstract: A method is provided for manufacturing a grease that exhibits high performance qualities at extremely cold temperatures and moderately elevated temperatures, as well as under normal operating conditions. In the method, a lithium soap thickener is formed in, heated, and mixed with polyalphaolefin. Upon cooling, a diester oil is blended with the polyalphaolefin and lighium soap thickener. Subsequently, extreme pressure antiwear additives and oxidation and corrosion inhibitors are added to the grease. Special hydroxides can also be intermittently added to enhance the performance of the grease under extreme temperatures as well as to minimize oil bleeding and transesterification.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 29, 1988
Date of Patent: November 7, 1989
    Assignee: Amoco Corporation
