  • Publication number: 20080270446
Abstract: A method and system for providing listings of multimedia events and for allowing a user to create virtual channels from the listings is described. The user can specify a headend or zip code and enter a search query to find multimedia events that are of interest to the user. In response, the system provides a list of multimedia events as the results of the user's search query. If the user so desires, the user can create a virtual channel based on the search results, according to certain embodiments of the invention.

  • Publication number: 20070218436
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in fire extinguisher training are provided. These methods and apparatus are implemented electronically without the need for an open flame. The training apparatus includes a display having a plurality of light sources adapted to display a varying light pattern simulating a dynamic flame; a sensor adapted to detect a stimulus emitted by one of a fire extinguisher and a fire extinguisher simulator and output a signal corresponding to the detected stimulus; and one or more processors adapted to receive the output from the sensor and vary the light pattern simulating the dynamic flame on the display in response to the stimulus detected by the sensor. The methods and apparatus may be used to train firefighters in the proper use of a fire extinguisher, for example, training in the techniques typically required when suppressing class A, B, C, D, or K type fires.

  • Publication number: 20060131181
Abstract: A solid polycrystalline potassium ion conductor having a ??-Al2O3 structure is obtainable by means of ion exchange of the alkali metal ions of a polycrystalline alkali metal ??-Al2O3 moulding, in which the alkali metal ions are sodium ions or a mixture of sodium and potassium ions and the molar ratio M2O (M=alkali metal) to Al2O3 is 1: x, x being an integer or non-integer number within the range 5 to 11, for potassium ions, the ion exchange being effected by a method wherein neither chloride-containing nor liquid potassium ion sources are used, the method comprising the steps of: embedding the polycrystalline alkali metal ??-Al2O3 moulding in an oxidic powder containing potassium and aluminium of a molar K2O: Al2O3 ratio within the range of 1: (x?1) to 1: (x+1), the weight of oxidic powder amounting to at least two times the weight of the moulding; heating the embedded moulding at a rate of at least 100° C. per hour to at least 1100° C.; and further heating to at least 1300° C.

  • Publication number: 20050200487
Abstract: Emergency workers and other personnel are often endangered by losing contact with other personnel, for example, firefighters working in hostile conditions. Methods and devices for improving the survivability and reducing the potential for injury or death of emergency personnel and others are provided. The methods and devices monitor the distance of members of a group to, among other things, minimize or prevent personnel from being separated from the group. Devices worn by members of a group monitor the distance between members by monitoring the characteristics of wireless communication, for example, signal strength, between members. If the distance between members exceeds or is less than a predetermined distance, an alarm is sounded to alert members to the potential for contact between members or loss of a member of the group.

  • Publication number: 20050065582
Abstract: The invention is a method, inclusive of its associated device or apparatus, of more effectively cooling the human body by the process of an enhanced evaporation process. The method provides for the spraying a generally wide pattern of a fine mist spray of de-mineralized water on the skin to be cooled from either a non-pressurized container having a manual pump spray for discharging the water from the container, or a pressurized container having a propellant mixed with the de-mineralized water, where the pressurized container further has a manually operated actuator for discharging the water from the container. In the latter case, the propellant is one of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and air, preferably nitrogen.
