  • Publication number: 20070247109
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for improving the efficiency of a battery supplied power supply system. More particularly, a method and system is provided for improving the voltage regulation efficiency for a system in which the input voltage that is to be regulated may vary widely. In the techniques disclosed, the voltage supply that is utilized for the drive control circuitry of the voltage regulators is varied in relation to variations in the input voltage. Thus in one embodiment, the voltage supply that is utilized for the circuitry that drives a control terminal of the output transistor of the regulation circuitry may be varied in relation to variations in the input voltage. For example, an inverse relationship may be established between the input voltage level and the voltage level that is used for the gate drive circuitry that controls the gates of regulator output transistors.

  • Publication number: 20070132430
Abstract: For operating each smart battery included in a smart battery system, the smart battery is initialized prior to the smart battery being electrically coupled to the smart battery system. The smart battery system or an external power source is selected to provide power to an information handling system device. The smart battery includes an electronics device, a charge switch and a discharge switch. The electronics device operates the charge and discharge switches to jointly control an operating condition of the smart battery in response to receiving a control input from a controller of the device. The charge and discharge switches are closed in response to the electronics device and the controller being in agreement to charge the first smart battery. The charge or the discharge switch is opened in response to either the electronics device or the controller directing either of the switches to be opened.

  • Publication number: 20060033470
Abstract: In a first embodiment, an information handling system (“IHS”) includes a processor. The IHS also includes a power rail coupled to the processor. The power rail supplies power, from a power adapter, to the processor. The IHS further includes a battery, that in response to a voltage fall on the power rail, supplies supplemental power to the power rail. In a second embodiment, an IHS includes a processor. The IHS also includes a power rail coupled to the processor. The power rail supplies power, from a power adapter, to the processor. The IHS further includes a battery, that in response to a voltage rise on the power rail, suppresses or sinks power supplied by the power adapter to the power rail.

  • Publication number: 20060022637
Abstract: In a method and system for detecting charger failure, a battery is operable to receive a charge from the charger via a pair of terminals. The battery includes an analog front end (AFE) coupled to the pair of terminals. The AFE is configured to receive at least one input corresponding to voltage measured across the pair of terminals. A battery controller included in the battery is coupled to the AFE by a serial link. The battery controller receives the at least one input via the serial link. In response to the voltage being below a predefined value, the battery controller is placed in a charge_not_received state, which is indicative of the charger being defective.

  • Publication number: 20060020833
Abstract: An information handling system (IHS) employs a power fault protection circuit to protect the IHS from overvoltages which may occur on an information line from a power adapter to the IHS. The system includes a processor coupled to the protection circuit. The circuit is operative in a first mode to decouple an information line from the IHS in response to a disable command and operative in a second mode to decouple the information line from the IHS when a voltage in the information line exceeds a predetermined threshold voltage.

  • Publication number: 20050112457
Abstract: An information handling system includes a battery assembly that is separable into two or more battery subassemblies to facilitate shipping. The battery subassemblies mechanically and electrically connect together to provide a completed battery assembly that exhibits increased power capacity as compared with an individual battery subassembly alone. In one embodiment, the individual battery subassemblies are sufficiently small in power capacity or other characteristic to avoid the increased shipping expense incurred when batteries exceed a certain threshold in power capacity, chemistry or other threshold characteristic.

  • Publication number: 20050086545
Abstract: An information handling system (IHS) is provided which can be powered by an AC adapter or a battery. The AC adapter output current and the battery output current are continuously monitored. If the AC adapter output current exceeds a predetermined threshold current even for an instant the IHS reduces the frequency at which the IHS's processor operates to reduce current drain on the adapter. If the battery output current exceeds a predetermined threshold current even for an instant, the IHS reduces processor frequency to reduce current drain on the battery. The predetermined threshold current level can be dynamic depending on the power output rating of the particular adapter and the power output rating of the particular battery.

  • Publication number: 20050024016
Abstract: In a method and system for converting an alternating current (AC) input to a direct current (DC) output, an AC-DC adapter includes a rectifier module operable to receive the AC input and generate a first DC output. The AC-DC adapter includes a buck converter module operable to receive the first DC output and generate the DC output responsive to a control signal. A controller module, included in the AC-DC adapter is operable to receive a first feedback signal input indicative of a target voltage required by a load and a second feedback signal input indicative of the DC output to generate the control signal. The controller module adjusts the control signal responsive to the first and second feedback signal inputs so that the DC output is maintained to be within a predefined range of the target voltage.
