Patent number: 8718091Abstract: A method and system of processing sampled voice packets from a voice packet sender for transmission over a bit-rate sampled data transmission system, such as by a cable modem over a cable modem termination system, to a voice packet recipient. Unsolicited grant arrivals in response to a request from the voice packet sender coupled to the cable modem are determined. The storing of sampled voice packets is synchronized with the unsolicited grant arrivals. Upon receipt of an unsolicited grant arrival, currently stored sampled voice packets are transmitted to the cable modem for further transmission to the voice packet recipient over the cable modem termination system.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2010Date of Patent: May 6, 2014Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Theodore F. Rabenko, James C. H. Thi, John D. Horton, Jr.

Patent number: 8681615Abstract: Downstream synchronous multichannel (DSSM) communications are provided among a plurality of carriers, each being a completely DOCSIS™ 2.0-compliant downstream. The synchronous multichannels support communications with both DSSM-capable communications nodes and non-DSSM-capable communications nodes (e.g., legacy cable modems). Non-DSSM packets are transmitted on a single channel. DSSM packets are split into multiple pieces, which are transmitted simultaneously on all available channels. Since the physical delay variation (e.g., group delay change) across the adjacent carriers is small (on the order of a symbol time), the multiple pieces arrive at the receiving communications nodes at nearly the same time and can be reassembled with minimal buffering and no packet ordering problems. To avoid causing trouble for the non-DSSM-capable communications nodes, the packet pieces are encapsulated with a header that causes the non-DSSM-capable communications nodes to silently discard them.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2012Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Daniel H. Howard, Niki R. Pantelias, David M. Pullen, John D. Horton, Jr., Thomas J. Quigley, Richard S. Prodan

Patent number: 8023508Abstract: Data packets transmitted over a wireless network are suppressed by hardware at the transmitting end and expanded on the receiving end. This conserves bandwidth as well as reduces the processing resource requirements in both the subscriber station and the base station. An extended header element is added to a data packet that is to be transmitted over the wireless network. The extended header element contains an index that is used along with an identifier to access a rule. The rule is used to determine which bytes are to be suppressed at the transmitter and expanded at the receiver.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2010Date of Patent: September 20, 2011Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: John D. Horton, Jr., Robert J. Lee, David M. Pullen

Patent number: 7349437Abstract: A system and method for hardware based reassembly of a fragmented packet is shown. The method includes receiving a bandwidth request to transfer a data packet from the data provider. Then, bandwidth is allocated to the data provider, where the allocated bandwidth is less than the requested bandwidth. Next, the present invention receives part of the data packet in the allocated bandwidth from the data provider, where the part of the data packet includes a fragment header, and the fragment header includes a sequence number for the part of the data packet. The part of the data packet is then stored in external memory. Finally, the data packet is reassembled by concatenating in the correct sequence the part of the data packet with other parts of the data packets to create the reassembled data packet.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2005Date of Patent: March 25, 2008Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: John D. Patent number: 7190704Abstract: A method for communicating information is disclosed wherein a time slot is allocated in a time division multiple access system for a transmission from a subscriber to a headend. Synchronization of a clock of the subscriber with respect to a clock of the headend is enhanced using a message transmitted from the headend to the subscriber which is indicative of an error in a subscriber transmission time with respect to the time slot. A feedback loop process is used to determine at least one of fractional symbol timing correction and carrier phase correction of a transmission from the subscriber to the headend. Filter coefficients are generated at the headend from a ranging signal transmitted from the subscriber to the headend and transmitting the filter coefficients from the headend to the subscriber, the filter coefficients being used by the subscriber to compensate for noise in a transmission from the subscriber to the headend.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2004Date of Patent: March 13, 2007Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Theodore F. Rabenko, James C. H. Thi, John D. Horton, Jr., Thomas J. Quigley, Lisa V. Denney, Jonathan S. Min, Christopher R. Jones, Henry Samueli, Fang Lu, Feng Chen, Sean F. Nazareth
