Patent number: 6564428Abstract: A compound hinge system includes a first link and a second link. The first link includes knuckles and arcing engaging surfaces next to stop portions that are configured for receiving engaging lug portions on a second link member. A second link member includes first and second sets of knuckles. One of the sets of knuckles cooperates with a hinged pin to pivot relative to the first link while the second set of knuckles receives a hinge pin to pivot relative to the second element. The lugs slide relative to the engaging surface and push against the stop portions to flex them outward and require additional force to move between various stops in the range of motion.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2001Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: Hoffman Enclosures, Inc.Inventors: John E. Richard, Craig E. Schinzel, Wallace H. Polzin, Clifford A. Klinger, William J. Nepsha, Marvin J. Thibodeau

Publication number: 20030079359Abstract: A gage assembly to measure the diameter of a piece of tubing. The gage assembly is especially configured to take measurements during the extrusion manufacture of the tubing when an eccentricity in the outer diameter of the tubing is present. The gage assembly includes a pair of contact wheels mounted such that the space between them defines a path with a diamond-shaped cross section for the tubing to pass through. Each contact wheel includes cutouts that define a pair of planar contact surfaces that are angularly disposed relative to one another. As the tubing leaves the extruder, it axially passes through the diamond-shaped path, coming in contact with the planar surfaces of the contact wheels.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2001Publication date: May 1, 2003Inventor: John E. Patent number: 5655495Abstract: A pre-start engine oiler for internal combustion engines provides a pressurized charge of oil to the lubricating system when the ignition key is turned to the on position and prior to engaging the starter. A reservoir connected with a valve body is supplied with oil under pressure from the engine lubricating system through a check valve disposed in an oil passage in the body when the oil pump pressure exceeds the reservoir pressure during the course of operation. The oil passage is connected by an oil line to an existing oil conduit by a tee or to an adapter installed between the oil filter and the engine block. Oil ports above and below the check valve extend between the oil passage and a piston chamber containing a sliding piston which normally closes flow through the oil ports. The piston is retracted by a solenoid connected in series to the ignition circuit through an electronic timer and switch.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1996Date of Patent: August 12, 1997Inventor: John E. Patent number: 5481889Abstract: A latching apparatus includes a rack and pinion drive. A latch bar slide between a latched and unlatched position with ramped latching members mounted on the bar engaging complementary latching members. The latch connects to several types of latch actuators including a button actuator having rotation indicating means. The latch is also configured to connect to a keyed latch actuator and a push-button actuator.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1993Date of Patent: January 9, 1996Assignee: Federal-Hoffman, Inc.Inventors: John E. Patent number: 5103571Abstract: A gage apparatus for determining uniformity in the inside or outside diameter of flexible rings and generally round objects based on the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. A spring biased lever pivotally mounted on a support plate has a releasable clamp at one end. An indicator is engaged with the lever to indicate the amount of pivotal movement thereof. A thin flexible band of stiff material has one end secured to a spool on the support plate and a portion of its length passes slidably through the clamp and forms a circular loop and its terminal end is fixed to the clamp. The ratio of the distance from the pivot point of the lever to the connection with the band is pi (3.1416) times the distance from the pivot point to the connection with the indicator whereby circumferential measurements are converted and indicated as diametric measurements. As the lever pivots, the diameter of the circular looped portion of the band will increase or decrease.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 1991Date of Patent: April 14, 1992Inventor: John E. Richards

Patent number: 4995297Abstract: A locking ratchet wrench has a main body with an elongate handle portion and a stationary jaw at one end and a slotted guideway extending through the stationary jaw. A generally square aperture extends transversely through the stationary jaw and rearwardly from the slotted guideway. A movable jaw having ratchet teeth at its rear end is slidably fitted in the guideway. A locking pawl block is slidably retained for forward and rearward movement within the aperture and has locking teeth at the forward end thereof corresponding to the movable jaw ratchet teeth. A spring at the rear end of the locking pawl block normally urges it forward in the aperture. A movable handle pivotally mounted on the main body has front sides slidably received on each side of the aperture and movably connected to said to the locking pawl block to move it into and out of toothed engagement with the movable jaw ratchet teeth.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1989Date of Patent: February 26, 1991Inventor: John E. Patent number: 4881645Abstract: A security holder consisting of a frame having an enclosed region presenting an opening through which an article such as a cassette may be inserted, and an extended handle portion which makes the holder difficult to conceal. A pair of opposing ramps which are slightly beveled and molded integrally into the side walls of the frame adjacent the opening of the enclosed region distort the frame when the article is inserted through the opening, and irremovably retain the article within the enclosed portion once the trailing edge of the article passes the ramps. In order to permit the frame to flex or distort sufficiently as the leading edge of the article is pressed through the opening between the ramps, a portion of the surface of the frame closely proximate to the ramps is cut, thinned, apertured, or otherwise weakened. Other angled projections on various portions of the holder frame are used to align or direct the motion of the article as it is inserted into the enclosed potion.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1988Date of Patent: November 21, 1989Assignee: Shamrock Industries, Inc.Inventors: Mark G. Smiler, John E. Richard

Patent number: 4790448Abstract: A container and lid assembly including a container having a cylindrical side wall and top rim, and a lid having an inverted U-shaped rim and depending skirt portion which is snapped over the rim of the container wall to form a sealing closure therewith. An annular ridge projects inwardly from the inner surface of the skirt portion so as to ride over and engage under the upper bead of the container wall, thereby creating single point interference fits between the container and lid. The outer edge of a first shoulder engages a score line on the inner surface of the skirt portion defining a bi-directional tear strip. The distal end of the tear strip closely confronts a second shoulder when the container is originally sealed. The inside wall of the lid prevents the container from being deformed or collapsing when opened.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1987Date of Patent: December 13, 1988Assignee: Liberty Diversified IndustriesInventors: James V. Ostrum, Gary C. Springer, Kenneth G. Weller, John E. Richard, Robert E. Montrose

Patent number: 4082078Abstract: A lock assembly for a domestic cooking appliance for use during a pyrolytic self-cleaning operation. The assembly includes a pair of cams mounted on a common shaft which provide the dual functions of energizing and de-energizing certain switches in the operating circuit as well as mechanically engaging and locking certain door latch components. The cams are rotated into and out of the locked and unlocked positions by a single lock motor.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1976Date of Patent: April 4, 1978Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventors: Richard A.
